ISM Export dialog

Used to export Structural members and changes to Structural members to ISM (Integrated Structural Model) repository files (*.ism.dgn).

Accessed from:

Note: When a subset of structural members in the model are selected with Element Selection tool, the Export Select Set to Created SubStructure dialog opens before proceeding to the ISM Export dialog.

This dialog allows setting a substructure name to the objects in the selection set. The Name entered is assigned to the substructure formed of objects in current selection set being exported. Such names will be available in the Export dialog to select from the Substructure list prior to export.
SettingDescription
File > New (Create ISM Repository) Opens an ISM Export save as dialog with file filter set to ISM repository files (*.ism.dgn).
File > Open (Update ISM Repository) Opens an ISM Export open dialog with file filter set to ISM repository files (*.ism.dgn).
File > Exit Closes the ISM Export dialog without saving changes.
Settings > Logging When checked, a log file is created.
Note: This option is common to the ISM Export and ISM Import dialogs.
Settings > Revision Tracking When checked, Design History functionality is enabled for tracking changes to the DGN file. This differs from the ISM Design History tracking that occurs by default when changes are made to *.ism.dgn repository files.
Note: This option is common to the ISM Export and ISM Import dialogs.
Settings > Reference Files When checked, Structural members in attached reference files are exported.
Note: Structural members in referenced files are exported to Structural Synchronizer, and are merged into a single *.ism.dgn file.
Settings > Section Map Opens the Export Mapping Form dialog which is used to scan the model or sub-model being exported and then map OpenBuildings Designer section definitions with Structural Synchronizer section definitions. You can then save the mappings as text files for reuse.
ISM Export tool bar Located just below the menu bar, the ISM Export tool bar is used to change the display of the ISM Export dialog to allow manipulation of the available settings.
  • [Translator Name] Translator — Displays the data exchange translator (default is ISM) currently being used.
  • Map DataGroup Instance — Activates the Member Table and its DataGroup mapping controls.
  • Set Default Material — Activates the Default Material Grade panel in which material assignments are made for incoming Structural members.

Structural Types Displays types of Structural members being exported (member, wall, solid, etc). Selecting from the tree view acts as a filter, updating the member table.
Substructure Displays the available substructure names in the pull down list; select one to export selected substructure (that were created and named for selected structural members in ISM Import), or select the Export Selected or All option to export the entire structure.
Member table Displays mapping information between OpenBuildings Designer member definitions and ISM definitions. The active model is scanned for elements containing Structural data, and then that information is mapped to the closest ISM usage definition available.
  • Type — Displays the OpenBuildings Designer member DataGroup catalog Type (Family/Part) information. Part definitions contain the Structural data information, and are defined in the DataGroup System using the string Family::Part. For instance Steel::Beam is exported to ISM as Steel Beam
  • Instance — Displays the OpenBuildings Designer member DataGroup catalog Name (section type) information. Structural discipline members are selected from DataGroup catalogs. The Name attribute is used to filter out member types from the catalog query that are not related to the active placement tool or member manipulation context. For instance, the member type Steel::Beam contains a finite list of instance types: Bar Joist Envelope, Hollow Structural Section, Plate Girder, Wide Flange Beam and Wide Flange Girder.
  • ISM Use — Displays the closest ISM member definitions that can be mapped to the outgoing OpenBuildings Designer member definitions. Mappings that can not be determined automatically are displayed as Unset. Select from the ISM Use pick list to map to one of the ISM usage types.
Default Material Grade Used to define a default material grade prior to export for members which do not have a material grade property defined. The Structural Material Grade property is used to define the ISM steel or concrete material name. Members exported without a material grade property defined are not assigned an ISM material. The ISM material name is used to support Import mapping of material and ISM usage to OpenBuildings Designer's DataGroup System.
  • Steel: — Type the default steel material grade in the field provided.
  • Concrete: — Type the default concrete material grade in the field provided.
  • Composite Deck: — Type the default composite deck material grade in the field provided.
  • Aluminum: — Type the default aluminum material grade in the field provided.
  • Masonry: — Type the default masonry material grade in the field provided.
  • Timber: — Type the default timber material grade in the field provided.
Note: The default material grade is not mandatory. If the default material grade is not set, the element will be exported with no ISM material.
Export Begins the export process which includes:
  • A progress bar appears with overall import status and information about the types of members being processed.
  • If you are updating an existing repository, the Commit Message dialog appears prompting a change description.

  • If any of the exported members do not have a material grade defined and no Default Material Grade has been defined in the ISM Export dialog, the No Default Material Grade dialog is opened for each instance.
Note: If your workset contains multiple buildings, the Select Building dialog is opened prompting you to select a building from the list of building definitions.
Cancel Closes the dialog without exporting.
Messages area Displays the target *.ism.dgn repository file name and path.
