ProjectWise Project Insights Help

Configuration Overview

The basic steps that are required to enable ProjectWise Project Insights and gather ProjectWise Design Integration and ProjectWise Deliverables Management data are simple and easy to do. However, the level of value that you get out of ProjectWise Project Insights depends on how much care and attention you put into the details of configuring the dashboard to display exactly the information you want, and nothing you don't want.

All of the configuration for ProjectWise Project Insights really centers around addressing this one question:

  • What specific information about your documents and deliverables packages do you want to display in the ProjectWise Project Insights portal of your ProjectWise project?

It is expected that your overall configuration will undergo several revisions until you achieve the results you are expecting in the dashboard. The initial uploading of data from the ProjectWise database to the ProjectWise Project Insights portal might take a while depending on the amount of data being uploaded. It also takes a while to import and process data from ProjectWise Deliverables Management. Finally, it may take a while (up to 24 hours) for ProjectWise Project Insights to reconfigure the display of the dashboard reports whenever you change attribute-related settings in the dashboard.

Basic Steps for Displaying ProjectWise Data

Use this list to get a general idea of the basic steps you need to perform to enable ProjectWise Project Insights and get ProjectWise Design Integration data uploaded and displayed in the ProjectWise Project Insights portal of your ProjectWise project.

  1. Download and install the ProjectWise Analytics Data Upload Service (latest version)

    (see also Upload Service Requirements)

  2. Use the ProjectWise Analytics Data Source Administrator application (delivered with ProjectWise Analytics Data Upload Service to configure a connection to the database whose data you want to upload.

This establishes a data pipeline between your ProjectWise database/datasource and the ProjectWise Project Insights service. At this point, no data is uploaded yet, because the Upload Service does not yet know which specific work area in the specified database/datasource to upload data from, or which ProjectWise project to upload data to.

Important: The step of configuring a database connection only needs to be done ONCE per database/datasource. If you have a Bentley-hosted deployment of ProjectWise, this step will be done by the Bentley Managed Services team. If you have a local (on-premise) deployment of ProjectWise, then this step should be done by your database administrator. Also, while you can technically install ProjectWise Analytics Data Upload Service on any computer, it is typically (and recommended to be) installed on the same computer as the ProjectWise Design Integration Server.
  3. Turn on ProjectWise Project Insights in your ProjectWise project

If needed, register a new ProjectWise project first.

Also, make sure you give permissions to the project team members you want to allow to view and/or configure ProjectWise Project Insights.

  4. Associate a work area from your datasource (whose database was selected in step 2) to the same ProjectWise project where you turned on ProjectWise Project Insights (from step 3)

This tells the Upload Service which work area in the datasource to upload data from, and which project in the cloud to upload the data to.

  5. Go to the ProjectWise Project Insights portal of your ProjectWise project and configure dashboard settings to define how uploaded data is displayed.

In the dashboard settings you will select which ProjectWise document attributes you want to use to group documents by in the dashboard reports.

Remember: The Upload Service will begin uploading data to the portal as soon as all three of these things are in place:
  • ProjectWise Project Insights is turned on in your ProjectWise project
  • A connection between your ProjectWise database and the ProjectWise Project Insights service has been configured in the Upload Service Administrator
  • A work area in the ProjectWise datasource (whose data is scheduled to be uploaded) is associated to your ProjectWise project

Basic Steps for Displaying Deliverables Management Data

  1. Turn on ProjectWise Project Insights in the same ProjectWise project where ProjectWise Deliverables Management is already turned on and in use.

Also, make sure you give permissions to the project team members you want to allow to view and/or configure ProjectWise Project Insights.

When you turn on ProjectWise Project Insights in a ProjectWise project where ProjectWise Deliverables Management is already turned on and in use ("in use" meaning that the project already contains some incoming and/or outgoing deliverables data), ProjectWise Project Insights automatically begins processing the available ProjectWise Deliverables Management data.

Note: It does not matter which service you turn on first. For example, in a new ProjectWise project, you can turn on ProjectWise Project Insights first and then at any time later turn on ProjectWise Deliverables Management. ProjectWise Project Insights will begin processing data from ProjectWise Deliverables Management once there is some incoming and/or outgoing deliverables data to process.

Upgrading from ProjectWise Project Performance Dashboards

These are the basic configuration steps if you want to use ProjectWise Project Insights in a project that is already using ProjectWise Project Performance Dashboards.

  1. Upgrade your ProjectWise Analytics Data Upload Service installation (install the latest version) and then reconfigure any existing database connections and data collection/upload schedules.

    (see also Upload Service Requirements)

You can either uninstall the old version first, or just install the new version and let the installer uninstall the old version for you.

Note: When reconfiguring a database connection, make sure you turn on the setting Upload existing Audit Trail information, if it was previously turned off.
  2. Make sure you give permissions to the project team members you want to allow to view and/or configure ProjectWise Project Insights.
  3. Go to the ProjectWise Project Insights portal of your ProjectWise project and configure dashboard settings to define how uploaded data is displayed.
