ProjectWise Toolbar in ArcMap

Installing the ProjectWise Extension to ArcMap adds a ProjectWise toolbar to ArcMap. This toolbar provides various commands that let users interact with ProjectWise from within ArcMap.

To open the ProjectWise toolbar in ArcMap, select Customize > Toolbars > Bentley ProjectWise Extension.

Tool Description Notes

Used to log in to a ProjectWise datasource from within ArcMap. This icon is disabled once you log in. Because you can only be logged in to one datasource at a time in ArcMap, you must first log out of the current datasource before you can log in to another.

Logout

Used to log out of the current ProjectWise datasource from within ArcMap. This icon is disabled if there is no active datasource connection.

Login Information

Used to display information about the active datasource connection. This icon is disabled if there is no active datasource connection.

New ArcMap Document

Opens the New Document Dialog , which is used to create a new ArcMap document in the active ProjectWise datasource. Once the new ArcMap document is created, the file opens in ArcMap. This icon is disabled if there is no active datasource connection.

Open ArcMap Document

Used to open an ArcMap document (MXD or MXT file) from ProjectWise. It is essentially the same as the ArcMap File Open command, except that instead of browsing the local or network drives for an ArcMap document, you browse the active datasource.

This icon is disabled if there is no active datasource connection.

Update ArcMap Document Server Copy

Used to check in changes to the active ArcMap document, while leaving the document checked out and open in ArcMap. This command is the same as the Update Server Copy command in ProjectWise Explorer.

It is enabled when there is an active datasource connection and when the active ArcMap document is a ProjectWise document.

Add Data

Used to add data from the active datasource to the active ArcMap document (MXD or MXT file). Supported data types are:
  • ESRI Shapefiles (SHP)
  • ESRI Personal Geodatabases (PGDB)
  • ESRI File Geodatabases (GDB)
  • Some raster file formats (BIL, BIP, JPG, BMP, TIF and SID)
  • CAD files (DGN and DWG files)
  • Layer files (LYR files)

Multiple selections are allowed, thus, more than one layer can be added to the active ArcMap document within a single Add Data operation.

It is essentially the same as the ArcMap Add Data command, except that instead of browsing for data on local or network drives, you browse for data in the active datasource.

This icon is disabled if there is no active datasource connection.

When adding a PGDB, all layer Feature Classes composing the PGDB are added to the map.

Add External Data to ProjectWise

Opens the Import Document Dialog , which is used to add the current MXD or MXT to the active datasource and, optionally, to import the dataset not already stored in ProjectWise. This command is available even if some of the ArcMap data in the current session is not ProjectWise data.

Export ArcMap Document

Used to export an existing ArcMap document from the active datasource. It is essentially the same as the Export/Send to Folder command in ProjectWise Explorer except for the following differences:
  • It exports (or sends) the selected ArcMap document and all of its constituting files (shapefiles, PGDB, rasters, and so on) to the target folder as does the standard export command.
  • It rewrites the data source (the path to the layers in the ArcMap document) of each layer to reflect to the export settings and the export destination.

In other words, after opening the exported file from the export directory in ArcMap, the layers will be loaded correctly if the export command was launched through ArcMap. On the other hand, the layers will most likely not be loaded correctly if it was invoked from ProjectWise Explorer.

This icon is disabled if there is no active datasource connection.

Error Manager

Opens the ProjectWise Error History dialog, which lists the ProjectWise errors that have occurred while connected to ProjectWise within ArcMap. Use the Clear button to clear the error stack. The Information (Error Manager) icon is enabled when errors have been recorded, and is disabled if no errors occurred, or after clicking the Clear button in the ProjectWise Error History dialog.
Note: Although it should normally be done automatically at installation, some initial configuration may be required in ArcMap after installing the ProjectWise Extension to ArcMap:
  1. Launch the ArcMap application.
  2. Select Customize > Extensions.

    The Extensions dialog opens.

  3. Find the Bentley ProjectWise Extension entry in the list of installed extensions.
  4. Turn on the Bentley ProjectWise Extension entry to enable the extension.

If the extension is disabled (toggle is not checked), all the commands in the extension's toolbar will be disabled.
