PlantWise Help

Mass Properties Dialog

The PlantWise Mass Properties dialog displays a list of components included in the current calculations, any errors in calculating a mass property attribute, and the values for weight, center of gravity, and moments of inertia of the group of items in the selection.

The Mass Properties dialog has six sections:
  • Menus,
  • Component Selection,
  • Components/ Weight Selection,
  • Warnings,
  • Mass Properties, and
  • Command buttons.

Menus

The PlantWise Mass Properties dialog has four menus:
  • File
    • Save Model,
    • Save Model As, and
    • Close the dialog.
  • Edit
    • Remove User Input – Only available when working with a piece of equipment, this option removes all mass property data entered or imported by you and reverts all values to those calculated by PlantWise. (The PlantWise calculated values, is covered in Mass Property Calculations.)
  • Reports
    • Report Output to Screen – Opens the mass-properties-default-report prefaced with the summary data contained in the Mass Properties section of the dialog.
    • Report Output to File – Saves the mass-properties-default-report and the summary data contained in the Mass Properties section of the dialog to a file specified by you.
    • Export Output to Screen – Opens the mass-properties-default-export report.
    • Export Output to File – Saves the mass-properties-default-export report to a file specified by you.
    • Warning List – Opens the list of warnings collected for the current selection of model objects.
The mass-properties-default-report and the mass-properties-default-export reports are customizable PlantWise reports and are edited via the Report Writer.
  • Display
    • Display Empty CG – Turn on and off the Empty CG graphic.
    • Display Operating CG - Turn on and off the Operating CG graphic
    • Scale CG Symbol 10x - To locate the CG graphic in larger models, this choice increases the symbol by a factor of 10. There is no size limit for the graphic.
    • Scale CG Symbol 0.1x - Once located, you can reduce the CG symbol, also by a factor of 10. There is no limit as to how many times the graphic can be reduced.

Component Selection

Items included in a mass properties calculation are listed in the Component Selection list at the tope of the PlantWise Mass Properties dialog. Items in this list are grouped by their type prefix:
  • Eq for equipment,
  • Member for independent structural members that have not been assigned to a structure or pipeway,
  • Pipe for pipelines,
  • Pipeway for pipeway sections, and
  • Structure for structure sections.

Double clicking on an item opens the editor or builder for that object.

You can control items in the list with the selection of buttons to the right of the component list. Individual list members are selected by clicking on the entries in the list. <Shift+click> and <Ctrl+click> can be used to select multiple items.
  • - Highlights the selected item(s).
  • – Unhighlights the selected item(s).
  • – Removes the selected item(s) from the list and updates the calculations.
  • – Opens a new Mass Properties dialog containing only the selected item(s)
  • – Changes the listing of the selected structure(s) and/or pipeway(s) to a complete list of its members.

There is also a pop up menu that opens with a right mouse click in the component list. This menu. From this menu, you can open the editor or builder for the selected item (Edit), Zoom To the selected item, Highlight the selected item(s), UnHighlight the selected item(s), Open a new Mass Properties dialog for the selected item(s), Delete the selected item(s) from the Component Selection list, and Expand the selected structure(s) and/or pipeway(s).

There are two radio buttons directly below the selection list. These buttons are used to select what values appear in the Mass Properties section. Components reported below has two options: All for the combined values of the full selection; or Single Selected for one item in the list selected by clicking on it in the list. When in Single Selected mode, the item is written in in the list, only warnings for the one item will be listed in the Warnings box, the item name will be written in above the Mass Properties frame, and the summary reports are disabled in the Reports menu.
Note: If the Single Selected item is a piece of equipment, you can change any of the mass property values. See "editing equipment mass property attributes" section.

Components/Weight Selection

When the All option of the Components reported below group is selected the values displayed in the Mass Properties frame are for the entire model. When the Single Selected option is selected the values displayed in the Mass Properties frame are for only the component selected.

When the Default option of the Weight Table Selection group is selected the default-pipe-weight data table is used to calculate the weight of pipes. When the Detailed option of the Weight Table Selection group is selected the pipe-weights data table is used to calculate the weight of pipes.

The default-pipe-weight data table is intended to be used early on in the design when detailed weights are not available. The table uses the pipe's Rating and Material to find the unit weight for the pipe's diameter. Sample tables are provided in the demo and dpar_master projects that are installed with PlantWise.

Warnings

If there is a problem with any calculation for any item in the Component Selection list, that item is written in in the list and its warning(s) are listed in the Warnings box below the Component Selection list. Missing attribute values that will generate a warning are:
  • Equipment
    • equipment weight
    • fluid volume
    • fluid density
  • Pipeline
    • material unit weight
    • fluid density
  • Structural Members and Floors
    • weight

Mass Properties

The Mass Properties section of the PlantWise Mass Properties dialog shows the calculated values for
  • Weight,
  • Center of Gravity, and
  • Moment of Intertia about GC
for either the full list of items in the Component Selection list or the item selected when using the Single Selected display option. For more on how these values are calculated, see Mass Property Calculations.
There are three columns containing different values for each mass property:
Empty (represented by the Empty CG graphic)
  • - Dry weights of all structures, pipeways, equipment, and routed pipelines in the Component Selection List.
  • Center of Gravity (x, y, z) of dry weights
  • Moments of Inertia (Mx, My, Mz) about the day center of gravity
Fluid
  • Weight of the fluid contained within equipment and routed pipelines in the Component Selection List.
  • Center of Gravity (x, y, z) of fluid.
  • Moments of Inertia (Mx, My, Mz) of fluid about the fluid center of gravity.
Operating (shown in to match the Operating CG graphic)
  • Total weight
  • Overall center of gravity (x, y, z)
  • Overall moments of inertia about the overall center of gravity
Weight Units – While distances are set to the Master Units selected in the PlantWise Project Setup, weight displays are selected from the Weight Units drop down list.
You can select:
  • for imperial unit projects
    • pounds,
    • tons (short), or
    • metric tonnes (2200 lb).
  • for metric or mixed unit projects
    • kilograms, or
    • metric tonnes (1000 kg).
