Equipment Placement

There are two ways to place equipment: directly through the Equipment Editor or using two dimensional CAD circles and rectangles.

Direct Equipment Placement

To place equipment directly, do the following:

  1. Open the Equipment Editor either by selecting Plant > Equipment from the PlantWise menu or PlantWise > Plant > Equipment from CAD.
  2. After selecting the equipment to place from the Tag selection list, enter the x-, y-, and z-coordinates as well as the dimension attributes listed for the equipment. Once
  3. Once all the data is entered, click Accept for the values to take effect.

Equipment Placement with CAD

PlantWise can associate 2D circles and rectangles with equipment, obstacles, and pipeways in the process model. This allows a layout designer to create a 2D layout in CAD and use this plot as a starting point for the PlantWise model. It is also easy to add a component while building the plant model by just drawing a rectangle or circle on the plot as a starting point for the equipment, obstacle, or pipeway to be added. As obstacles are always boxes and pipeways rectangular, they are placed with rectangles. See placement using this method for obstacles and pipeways.

Equipment Placement Points
Equipment to be Placed Placement Point Dimension
Corner Center of Side Center Length Width Diameter
Rectangular (longer in y-direction) y-dimension x-dimension
Rectangular (longer in x-direction) x-dimension y-dimension
Horizontal Cylinder (longer in y-direction) y-dimension x-dimension
Horizontal Cylinder (longer in x-direction) x-dimension y-dimension
Vertical Cylinder diameter

Equipment is placed so that the local placement point and orientation of the equipment coincides with the placement point and orientation of the circle or rectangle in the layout. Equipment placement points are defined as part of their geometry rules. The location of equipment placement points with respect to the graphic in the plot is shown in above table.

The placement point of a circle is its center. The placement point of a rectangle is either one of its ends, a corner, or its center. The default orientation of a circle is north. The default orientation of a rectangle is the main axis in the direction away from the placement point.

A circle in the plot has a single diameter dimension. If the equipment has an attribute named diameter, its value is set to the diameter of the selected circle.

A rectangle in the plot has two dimensions: length and width. The length is assumed to be the longer of the two dimensions. If the equipment to be placed in the plot has an attribute named length, its value is set to the length read from a selected rectangle. If the equipment has an attribute named width, its value is set to the width of a selected rectangle.

If a rectangle is being used to place a piece of equipment based on a horizontal cylinder, the diameter is the shorter axis of the rectangle and the length is the longer axis.

If there is no attribute named diameter, length, or width in the equipment definition, then no dimension information is automatically picked up from the plot.

The equipment placement process is as follows:

  1. Select the Place Equipment tool icon in the Plant Toolbox.
  2. Select the rectangle or circle with which to associate the equipment. Alternatively, draw a rectangle or circle and then select it.

The Equipment Selection dialog opens. It lists the equipment tag of all equipment in the Equipment List of the current model.

    The Equipment Selection Dialog.

  3. Select the equipment to be placed.
  4. Change the Orientation of the equipment if it is to be other than what PlantWise selects.
  5. Click Accept.

    The Equipment Editor dialog opens.

    • The name and description of the equipment will be filled in.
    • The location data (x-, y-, and z-coordinates) will be filled in and based on the location of the selected graphic. PlantBuilder always sets the z-coordinate to the default grade elevation – users need to change this value if the equipment is not to be placed at grade.
    • The Orientation selected in the Equipment Selection dialog will be filled in.
    • PlantBuilder will also gather dimensional data (length, width, or diameter) from the graphic. Other attributes, such as height, will have to be provided.
  6. Accept all entries before closing the dialog.
