Topology Cleanup

You can find the Topology Cleanup tools in the Topology ribbon group of the Map Topology workflow. The tools eliminate duplicate and similar line work, close gaps between element end points, segment crossing elements that do not intersect, eliminate dangling elements, and thin unnecessary vertices from line strings and curves.

The cleanup tools preserve the element types lines, line strings, curves, and circular arcs (non-circular arcs are also preserved when segmenting elements with a zero tolerance). Any arcs or curves contained in complex strings or shape elements are approximated with line strings using the stroke tolerance defined in the Topology category of Preferences dialog. As a result of stroking complex elements and shapes, the integrity of any connected strings in these element types will not be preserved. To maintain arcs, curves, and connected strings within complex elements and shapes, drop the complex status of the elements before using the cleanup tools.

To convert all linear elements to line strings before cleaning, use the key-in: FENCE STROKE

Note: To reverse unexpected results of a cleanup operation, be sure that you have a current backup copy of the original file.
Name Icon Description
Find Duplicate Linework
Locates duplicate linework and provides options to move or delete the duplicates.
Find Similar Linework
Locates similar linework.
Find Linework Fragments
Locates unconnected line fragments.
Thin Linear Element
Reduces the number of vertices in linear elements.
Segment Linear Element
Breaks linear elements where they intersect at interior points and to create separate linear elements.
Find Gaps
Finds empty space between two elements' endpoints.
Find Dangles
Locates and modifies line element dangles.
Connect Linework
Merges a network of connected linework into one element by using a fence.
Find Slivers
Flags or merges slivers into adjacent areas.
