Saved Views Dialog

Used to create, update, apply, import, and delete saved views and edit properties of saved views. Saving a view allows you to quickly apply a view with specific attributes.

You can access this dialog from the following:

  • Ribbon: Drawing > View > Saved Views dialog launcher
  • Ribbon: Drawing > Home > Primary > More split button
  • Ribbon: Modeling > Home > Primary > More split button
  • Ribbon: Modeling > View > Saved Views dialog launcher

You can dock the Saved Views dialog to the top or bottom edge of the application window.



The Saved Views dialog contains controls that are used to apply a saved view to a view in the design. The list box shows the name and description of each view saved in the active design file. To apply or delete a view, you must first select it or double-click the entry in the list.

Note: A saved view is a view definition and creating saved views in 3D is identical to 2D.
Note: The saved views in DGN libraries that were created in editions prior to MicroStation do not appear in the Saved Views dialog. A message appears in the status bar saying that the saved views from the DGN libraries should be updated. To view these saved views, open the DGN library in MicroStation (SELECTseries 1) or later editions and update the saved views.

Create Saved View

The effect is the same as clicking the Create Saved View tool in the Saved View toolbox.
Update Saved View Settings

The effect is the same as clicking the Update Saved View Settings tool in the Saved View toolbox.
Apply Saved View

The effect is the same as clicking the Apply Saved View tool in the Saved Views ribbon group in the View tab.
Edit Saved View Properties

Opens the Edit Properties dialog, which is used to change the name and description of the saved view you selected from the list box.

Delete Saved View

Deletes the selected saved view and its boundary. An Alert window opens when you click Delete Saved Views in either of the following cases:
  1. If you create a drawing model or sheet model using the Create Drawing dialog.
  2. If after placing a saved view, you add a drawing boundary to it.

Copy Saved View

Creates a copy of the selected saved view with all its settings.

Import Saved View

Opens the Open File dialog, which is used to select the file whose saved views you want to import into your file. If the selected file contains one or more saved views the Import Saved Views dialog opens, which is used to import saved views from another file. If the selected file contains no saved views, a message appears in the Message Center.

When you import a saved view, the view display is imported along with the saved view and not the levels.

Update from Library

Updates the saved view in the DGN file to reflect changes in the configured DGN library.
List Filter

If on, displays a filter row in the list box that lets you define a filter for any of the columns. For information on defining filters by string, integer, or boolean expressions, refer to the tables in Defining and Deleting Filters. For some columns, the boolean expressions in the filter field represent parameters as listed in Filter parameter definitions below.

  • Show column
    • 0 - Hide view boundary
    • 1 - Show view boundary
  • Is Associative column
    • 0 - Clip volume is not associated with saved view
    • 1 - Clip volume is associated with saved view
  • 2D/3D column
    • 0 - 2D
    • 1 - 3D
Name Sets the saved view's name. The maximum number of characters in the name is limited to 511. Alphabetic and numeric characters are valid. You can use upper and lowercase characters. However, the following special characters are not supported:
\ / . * ? < > | & = , “

If a saved view created in an earlier version of MicroStation contains any of these special characters, you will not be able to import or copy it in the current version of MicroStation.

Note: Using names that take advantage of longer names and special characters will make exporting to previous releases more difficult. Either names will be truncated or a remapping utility will be required.
Description Sets the saved view's optional description.
Type Indicates the type of view:
  • Saved View
  • Section View
  • Elevation View
  • Detail View
  • Plan View

You can change the normal saved view to any other view type such as detail view, section view and so on from the Properties dialog or using the following key-in:

Show If on, displays the saved view boundary so that you can manipulate its parameters.

You can hide the boundary by right-clicking the boundary and selecting Hide View Boundary from the pop-up menu.

You can resize and reorient the saved view boundary to fit its clip volume using the key-in NAMEDVIEW FIT CLIPVOLUME

Status Indicates the state of the saved views imported from the DGN library.
Is Associative

Indicates whether the saved view is associated with the clip volume. You cannot change associativity from this column.
Clip Volume Displays the named clip volume, such as a named boundary, that is associated with the saved view. The named clip volume is displayed only for saved views, detail views, and plan views. For section views and elevation views, the section clip element is displayed. If you create a new named clip volume, its name appears in the drop-down menu of saved views, detail views, and plan views. If you create a new section clip element, its name appears in the drop-down menu of all view types. If a named clip volume or section clip element to which a saved view is associated is deleted, the saved view will now contain its own clip volume and will behave like a saved view with a non-associative clip volume.
2D/3D Signifies whether the saved view is 2D or 3D.
Model Displays the name of the model containing the saved view.
Note: Saved Views pertain to viewing operations which are always associated to the master model. Hence, when a reference is activated, the Saved Views dialog still shows saved views of the master model and does not show the saved views of the reference.
File Displays the name of the file containing the saved view.
(list box) Right-click menu Right-click the title bar of the list box to get all the options for the list box as well as the option to Save Layout. By default, Type, 2D/3D, Model and File are hidden.
(Saved View) Right-click menu Right-click a saved view in the list box to see additional options related to that saved view.
  • Apply — Opens the Apply Saved View tool settings window to apply the saved view to the selected view or all open views.
  • Create Drawing — Opens the Create Drawing dialog to automate the dynamic views. This option is dimmed if the view type is saved view and if it is created in a drawing or sheet model.
  • Generate Callout — Allows you to place a section, detail or elevation callout depending on the view type selected. This option is enabled only for view types: Section view, Elevation view, and Detail view.
  • Associate Callout — Allows you to select an existing callout with which to associate the saved view.
  • Add Link to Element — Adds link to the selected element.
  • Delete — The effect is the same as clicking the Delete icon.
  • Rename — Allows you to rename the saved view.
  • Find Uses — Opens the Saved View Usage dialog to display the list of models in which the saved view is used.
  • Update from Library — The effect is same as clicking the Update from Library icon.
  • Properties — Opens the Properties dialog to display the saved view properties.
