STAAD.Pro Physical Modeler Help

Add / Assign material dialog

This dialog is used to add or assign materials to members, surfaces, or surface regions. Existing materials in the model can be used or new ones can be added to the model.

The Add materialdialog opens when the Add material tool is selected in the Sections and Materials group on the Catalog ribbon tab.

The Assign material dialog opens when either:
  • the Material tool in the Properties group on the Member ribbon tab is selected
  • the Material tool in the Properties group on the Surface ribbon tab is selected
  • the Material tool in the Properties group on the Region ribbon tab is selected

SettingDescription
Source Select one of the following options:
  • Catalog - Used to select one of the included STAAD.Pro material definitions.
  • Model - Used to select catalog materials previously added to your current model.
  • User Database - Used to select custom materials previously saved in your user database.
Type Select the type of member to use:
  • Standard — Used to select a standard material grade from the catalog.
  • Custom — Used to specify custom material properties and strengths.
  • Generic — Used to create a set of generic material properties.

Standard Type

Property Value
Specification Select the type of material used from the drop-down list of materials.
Name Select the material name from the list. Some materials, such as steel, have multiple entries representing different material grades.

Custom Type

Property Value
Specification Select the appropriate material specification to which this custom material will be added.
Name Type a name used to later identify the custom material.
E (Steel only) Specifies the modulus of elasticity (i.e., Young's Modulus).
G (Steel only) Specifies the shear modulus.
Possion "Poisson's ratio",ν, the ratio of transverse strain to strain in the direction of load.
Density The weight density of the material.
Alpha Coefficient of thermal expansion.
Damp Damping ratio to be used in computing the modal damping by the composite damping method in a dynamic analysis when CDAMP has been specified. Damping must be in the range of 0.001 to 0.990.
Fy (Steel only) Yield strength.
Fu (Steel only) Ultimate tensile strength.
Ry (Steel only) Yield strength ratio
Rt (Steel only) Tensile strength ratio
Fcu (Concrete only) Ultimate compressive strength of concrete.

Generic Type

Property Value
Material name Type a unique name used to identify the generic material.

Additionally, you must define E, G, Poisson, Density, Alpha, and Damp values for generic materials. See the description for custom materials for definitions.

Existing Material

If you select either Model or User database as the Source, you can then select an existing material from your model or custom user database.

Property Value
Type For User Database materials, select either Custom or Generic material types.
Specification For Custom materials, select the material type.
Name Select the existing material name from the list.
