Pipeline List

The pipeline list is opened from the Process menu in the PlantWise dialog or PlantWise menu in CAD.

The Pipeline List dialog contains two menus, a data entry section with a table of existing pipes, and two command buttons.

Menus

The Pipeline List dialog contains two menus: File and Edit.

The File menu allows you to:
  • save the model (Save Model),
  • save the model under another name (Save Model As), and
  • exit the dialog (Close).

The Edit menu gives you access to editors for multiple aspects of the pipeline.

SettingDescription
Edit Pipeline Opens the Pipeline Editor dialog.
Add Pipeline Adds an empty row to the bottom of the grid.
Duplicate Pipeline Adds a row to the bottom of the grid and copies all of the information from the currently selected row.
Note: The Line ID is incremented based on the current selection and other pipes in the model.
Connectivity Opens the Connectivity Editor dialog (see " Pipeline and Cable Connectivity " section). The dialog defines connectivity and inline components among equipment and pipelines, which is the next logical process model building step after defining pipelines.
Origin Opens the dialog that edits the origin of the pipeline.
Note: If the origin of the pipeline is another pipeline, Edit > Origin opens the Pipeline Editor for the originating pipeline.
Terminus Opens the dialog that edits the terminus of the pipeline.
Note: If the terminus of the pipeline is another pipeline,, Edit > Terminus opens the Pipeline Editorfor the terminating pipeline.
Named Inline List Opens the Inline Component List for the entire model.
Delete Deletes the pipeline after asking for confirmation.

Pipeline Entry

A new pipeline is entered by first using the Edit > Add Pipeline or Add Pipeline popup menu and then keying in a new pipeline identifier into the Line ID field and then entering its required and optional specifications in the remaining entry fields. Some of the entries may be selected from a drop down menu activated when the cell is selected.

Pipeline List.

The following data is required:
  • Pipeline Nominal Diameter
  • Pipe Class
  • Commodity Code
The following data is optional:
  • Unit ID
  • Insulation Code
  • Insulation Thickness
  • Operating Temp
  • Comments

Pipeline Nominal Diameter, Pipe Class, and Commodity Code must have legal values defined in the PlantWise data tables (see Appendix A - Default Data Tables). The values for these fields can either be keyed in or selected from the drop down list containing the legal values. Any value assigned to the Insulation Code is acceptable and indicates the presence of insulation.

To edit the default tables, see "Editing Data Tables" section.

SettingDescription
Diameter The Pipeline Nominal Diameter is used as a key for finding several pieces of data required for successful routing.
Unit ID The Unit ID is for information purposes only and may be used to identify the process unit.
Pipe Class The Pipe Class specifies both material and pressure classes of the pipeline. This information is used both as a key to pipeline specifications and to guide the AutoRouter in pipe routing order. These additional values can be found in the "Pipe Rating Properties" data table.
Commodity The Commodity Code guides the AutoRouter in determining: what pipeway level to use; the direction of entry to pipeway tees; what non-pocketing rules to use if a non-pocketing (gravity and suction) routing rule is required; default insulation thickness; and default operating temperature for the pipeline. These additional values can be found in the "Commodity Codes" data table.
Insulation Code

If an Insulation Code is given, PlantWise uses the Insulation Thickness to determine pipe spacing (both horizontal and vertical) while routing. For more on pipeline spacing, see "Pipeline Spacing".

The insulation code for a pipeline can be entered manually in the InsulationCode field of the Pipeline List, selected from the drop down list, or looked up in the commodity-properties data table based on the commodity code selected by you.

Once the insulation code is determined two things happen: one, the type of insulation is looked up from the insulation-properties data table; and two, the insulation thickness (based on nominal pipe diameter and operating temperature) is picked from the insulation-thickness table. If the pipeline’s diameter/temperature combination is not in the dpar-insulation-thickness table, then PlantWise calculates a weighted interpolation between the nearest pair of temperature and diameter values available in the table. If you do not provide insulation thickness or temperature data for the commodity, then the thickness is set to the Default Insulation Thickness defined in the Project Setup (see "Insulation" section). You can change the insulation thickness in the Pipeline List.

You can define any insulation code with a type in the insulation-properties data table. There are established behaviors for insulation codes with the type of HOT, COLD, or ACOUSTIC. Other insulation types listed in the data table behave differently as do codes entered in the Pipeline List that are not in the insulation-properties table. Depending on type, the bottom-of-pipe offset (as described in Pipeline Spacing) is determined based on thickness and possible shoe or cradle thickness.

Operating Temp For a different operating temperature than that suggested by the commodity code, you can enter a new value in the temperature Operating Temp column. Overridden temperature values should exist in the insulation-thickness data table.
Comments The Comments column allows you to make additional notes regarding pipelines.
Apply The new pipeline data is checked for completeness and correctness after clicking Apply. If the pipeline data is correct and complete, it is accepted and a pipeline object is created in the process model. If the data is incomplete or incorrect, an error message dialog appears. After the pipeline is accepted, the pipeline data remains in the entry fields to serve as a starting point for the entry of the next pipeline. If a pipeline with the entered line ID already exists, the new data for that line ID replaces the existing data.
Cancel Exits the dialog and lose any changes made since the last Apply.

To edit the process data of an existing pipeline, select the pipeline in the table and then change any of the values in the data entry fields. The new values are implemented only after the Apply is clicked.

To delete a pipeline from the object mode, select the pipeline in the table and then select Edit > Delete.

You are be prompted with:
Are you sure you want to delete the pipeline <Tag>
Selecting Yes deletes the pipeline, and No aborts the delete process.
