Using Print Styles
Print Organizer provides several ways for using print styles.
Print styles can be used:
- As a default print style to apply default print definition property values when creating print definitions.
- With a printer driver to apply printer-specific print definition property values when creating print definitions or when changing printers.
- As an on-demand print style to store a group of commonly used print definition property values that are used for a specific project or on an occasional basis.
If you typically apply a default set of print definition property values when you create print definitions, you can create a print style and assign it to a printer driver configuration file, or you can designate it as a default print style. Both Print Organizer and the Print dialog automatically apply these print styles when you create print definitions, and if you have a print style assigned to a printer driver configuration file, it will be applied when you select the printer driver.
You can also specify a print style in Print Organizer’s Create Print Definitions dialog when creating new print definitions. A print style is required in the Print style name text box (shown below) for variable print definitions but optional for fixed print definitions.
On-demand print styles are useful when you want to apply a group of commonly used print definition property values to a set of print definitions. For example, if you do not want text nodes and data fields to print, you can create a print style that specifically turns them off and apply that print style when you create new print definitions or when you modify existing print definitions.
Both Print Organizer and the Print dialog provide an Apply Print Style dialog to apply a print style to existing print definitions. These dialogs display all of the print styles that reside in the open DGN file and in the configured DGN libraries. Print styles that display with bold text reside in the active DGN file, while the remaining print styles reside in the configured DGN libraries.
When opening the Apply Print Style dialog, the printing system gathers the names of the print styles from the active DGN file and the DGN libraries. The names are sorted alphabetically and duplicate names are removed. Only the first instance of a duplicated print style is retained.
