To add a wind definition per ASCE 7

To add a wind load definition using the ASCE 7 code parameters, use the following procedure.

You can enter wind load definitions in terms of ASCE 7 code parameters and the program will generate the wind intensity versus heigh curve.
  1. On the Catalog ribbon tab, select the Wind tool in the Create Load Definitions group.

The Create: Wind Load Definition dialog opens.
  2. (Optional) Type a unique Name for the new wind intensity load definition.
  3. Select the ASCE7 from the Code drop-down list
  4. Select the Version of the ASCE 7 code to use. The program can generate wind intensity values for ASCE 7-2010 or ASCE 7-16 editions. The new load definition is selected and the properties are displayed in the Properties window.
  5. In the Properties group, specify the wind load details:
    1. Select the Building Classification Category.
    2. Type the Basic Wind Speed.
    3. For ASCE 7-16, type the Height above sea level used in calculating the Ke factor.
    4. Select the Exposure Category.
    5. Select the Structure Type. The second group of code parameters updates according to this selection.
  6. Select the hill or escarpment profile:
    1. Select the Type of Hill or Escarpment on which the structure sits.
    2. If a hill is present, specify the dimensions.
  7. Specify the structure type-specific data. For structures with a natural frequency below 1 Hz, you may select if the structure is Rigid or Flexible. This determines how the gust effect factor is calculated.
  8. Specify the pressure values (either for building structure or other structures):
    1. For buildings, select the side of the building to which this wind load applies.
    2. (Optional) To manually enter a value for the gust effect factor, G, check the option and type the value.
    3. (Optional) To manually enter a value for the force coefficient, Cf, check the option and type the value.
    4. (Optional) For buildings only: to manually enter a value for the product of the gust factor and internal pressure coefficient, GCpi, check the option and type the value.
For the optional factors or coefficients, if the manual option is not selected, then the program will calculate this value.
  9. Define the exposure factors for different model groups:
    1. Click the Exposure tab.
    2. Click in the Exposure drop-down. The exposure and group table is displayed.
    3. Type the exposure Factor to use for each different group and then select the group name from the drop-down in the Group cell.
    4. Click OK.
  10. Click OK.
The wind load definition is added to the model catalog.

When the wind load definition is selected, the details of the definition are displayed in the Properties panel along with a plot of the wind intensity versus height.

To edit the wind load definition, select the item in the catalog and then select the Edit tool in the Edit group.
