BS 5950 Lambda Critical

The Results - BS5950 Lambda Critical- At a Point command is available only to models which have rigid diaphragms at some levels.

Selecting the Process - Results - BS5950 Lambda Critical - At a Point command causes the Select Plan dialog box to appear. The point from which to measure the deflections is selected from the floor plan of one of the levels. From the list of story levels, select a story by clicking on it. It will become highlighted to indicate it is the floor plan that will be displayed.

Clicking OK will cause the floor plan of the chosen level to be drawn on the screen and the target cursor will appear. Clicking Cancel will return you to the RAM Frame program.

Click the target cursor on the point at which you wish to measure the deflections. Any point can be selected.

The Lambda Critical report will be displayed on the screen. The report states the deflection, interstory drift and Lambda Critical for each level for each analyzed load case. Note that if the point selected is outside the slab edge the values reported are those assuming the rigid diaphragm extended to the selected point.

Important: In Analysis mode the Lambda Critical points are produced for hard coded load combinations. These load combinations reflect the appropriate load factors for the notional loads from all the typical (code prescribed) load combinations. These combinations can be used to assess the sway state (sway/non-sway) of the frames, which can then be assigned to the frames in the Steel - Post Processor mode. In Load Combination mode ONLY the notional load case terms in each load combination are evaluated to calculate lambda critical at the selected points.

To exit the report, double click the control bar in the upper left corner.

Note that the Lambda Critical values will be calculated (Lambda critical = 1.0/ (story drift *200)) for all analyzed load cases, but they are only valid for Notional load cases.
