OpenBuildings™ Designer Help

(Building) IFC Import

Used to import an IFC file by name or to browse for a file to import (Input tab). Also used to convert IFC (rendering) material names to part and family names when IFC entities are imported (Settings tab).

Accessed from:
  • Key in only - IFCIN
Note: The key in is legacy functionality, not advancing in CONNECT, and is available for those who find some usefulness. It is recommended you "import" (ie open) IFC files via the Backstage by selecting File > Import > Exchange File Type > IFC (*.IFC).

Note: You can map Building parts and families to an IFC dataset using the Map Custom Building Designer Dataset to IFC Dataset.
SettingDescription
Input tab
  • IFC File field — Imports the named IFC file entered in this field. The file name and full directory path is entered. Selecting the Browse button opens the Select IFC File to Import dialog where navigation to, and selection of, IFC files is accomplished. Choose the file and dismiss the dialog. The chosen file appears in the IFC File field.
Settings tab

  • Use IFC Material Name As Part/Family Name — When IFC entities are imported, IFC material (rendering) names are used as part and family names when this setting is on. When the setting is off, the IFC entity part name is ifcentityname and the family name is IFC.
  • Use Symbology from Part/Family Instead of IFC File — Overrides mapping of IFC properties when on.
  • Override DataGroup Values from Settings File — Uses the DataGroup Mapping file to map IFC file properties to datagroup properties when on. Uses internal application mapping strategies when off.
  • Ignore Story Containment — All IFC items are imported into the active DGN file when on. All items on each individual floor are imported into separate DGN files, one per floor, when off.
Import Imports the IFC file and closes the dialog.
Tip: The IFC Importer handles working unit settings that are consistent (metric to metric for example). It is recommended that users check the working units of the source and target files to make sure there is no discrepancy.
Note: Progress is displayed in a separate popup dialog when Import is pressed. Subsequent status and information messages are displayed in the status bar Message Center.
Note: This tool is enabled only when the MDL application TFIFC is loaded. Selecting the tool icon automatically loads the application. Because TFIFC is not loaded by default when starting OpenBuildings Designer, the key-in listed for this tool will not respond if keyed in before using the tool icon or menu selection.
