BOM Manager

The BOM Manager lets you define Bills of Material for any given Work Order, validate the data, and optionally submit it to a third-party purchasing system such as SAP.

Accessed from:

  • Manage Ribbon > Project Data Group
Note: The dialog can be docked in the design interface, pinned, or collapsed.
When the dialog is loaded the first time in a project you must Load a work order in order to enable the other tools in the dialog. Once a work order has been loaded in the project the next time the BOM Manager is loaded it will load the previously used work order by default like the image below:

BOM Tree

The tree displays a hierarchy of the loaded work orders and their corresponding BOM Documents and Revisions.
  • Selecting a node in the tree displays the parts associated with the selected item.
  • Selecting a work order will display all parts associated with all BOM documents and revisions under that work order.
  • Selecting a specific BOM Document will display all parts associated with all revisions under that BOM Document.
  • Selecting a specific Revision will display all parts associated with that revision.
  • A BOM document name of "Unassigned Items" indicates that no BOM Document has been assigned to the parts listed here.
  • A Revision name of "Unassigned Items" indicates that no revision has been assigned to the parts listed here.

Data Grid

The parts and devices associated with the selected node in the BOM Tree are listed in a parent / child data structure.

SettingDescription
Group By You can change how the data is grouped in the data grid by choosing from the following options:
  • Balloon - The parent records are the Balloon / Part Number records and the child records are the device IDs that the Balloon / Part Number are assigned to.
  • Device - The parent records are the device ID records and the child records are the Balloon / Part Numbers associated with the devices.
Devices You can filter the records shown in the data grid by choosing from the following options:
  • Show All - Lists all records.
  • Unplaced Devices only - Lists only the devices that are not placed in the project.
Views You can change the default view of the data grid by selecting from the following options in the picklist:
  • Material - This is the default view which is suited for editing common bill of material parts and devices.
  • Nameplate - This view is designed for editing nameplates (device labels) where you can specify the text you want on the nameplate and specifications for the nameplate.
The View drop down button allows you to choose from the following commands:
  • Save As - Enter a name for the view that you want to save, and it will store the currently selected fields in the order you have them. The saved view is then listed and available for selection in the Views picklist.
Refresh Select this button to refresh the information in the data grid. This could be useful in cases where multiple people may be collaborating in the same project.
Flag Field
There are two icons that can be displayed in the Flag field:
  • - Indicates the record represents a primary part number if a device has multiple part numbers assigned to it.
  • - Indicates no symbol has been placed in the project for this part.
Data Grid Editing Notes
  • When adding a new part record you can type in a balloon number directly in the data grid.
  • The device records allow you to enter Installation, Location, and Device Tags directly into the data grid. The Installation and Location fields support pull-down lists that contain the values currently used in the active project. You are not, however, allowed to edit the device IDs when a symbol has already been placed in the project for that ID.
  • You can edit the quantity of a device in the data grid.
  • Drag and Drop Support - You can drag and drop one or more records from the data grid to a node in the BOM Tree to assign those items to the specific Work Order, BOM Document, and/or Revision that you drop them on.

Revision Properties

When you select a revision node in the BOM Tree the Revision Properties panel will display the following information:
SettingDescription
Allowed Balloon no range Displays the 'Start' and 'End' values which define a range of balloon numbers that you want to allow for the revision. This is useful to ensure that when you are adding new entries to an existing BOM document that you do not accidentally reuse a previously taken balloon number. The BOM Manager will alert you if you attempt to enter a balloon number for a new part that is outside the specified range for this revision.
Starting Sheet No Displays the starting page number of the bill of Material document that you want to add new entries to. This is useful if you have existing BOM documents and you want to add new items to the end of the existing document. You can define a BOM report template to use this starting number as the first page number of the report you generate. You could then merge the resulting report with your existing report to ensure that the page numbering flows properly.
Edit Revision Properties Select this button to edit the Allowed Balloon No Range or the Starting Sheet No.

Toolbar Options

SettingDescription
Load Work Orders Displays the Load Work Order(s) dialog letting you load the work order(s) which have been created for the project.
Note: The Work Orders are created or imported using the Work Order Manager.
Add New This flyout button is context sensitive and will enable or disable commands depending upon what you have set focus to in the BOM Manager. The following commands are found here:
  • Bill of Material (BOM) - This option is enabled when you select a Work Order in the BOM tree. Selecting this option displays the Add New BOM dialog.
  • Revision - This option is enabled when you select a BOM Document in the BOM Tree. Selecting this command will display the Add New Revision dialog.
  • Part - This option is enabled when the Data Grid is set to Group By Balloon and no existing balloon / part record is currently selected. It's also enabled when the Data Grid is set to Group by Device and you select an existing device so that the software understands what device you intend to add a part to. Selecting this command displays the Add Part dialog.
  • Device - This option is enabled when the Data Grid is set to Group By Device and no existing device record is currently selected. It's also enabled when the Data Grid is set to Group by Balloon and you select an existing balloon/part so that the software understands what balloon/device you intend to add a device to. Selecting this command displays the Add Device dialog.
Edit You can select one or more part records and choose select Edit to display the Edit dialog.
Copy/Paste Select the records you want to copy and click the Copy button to add the objects to the clipboard. Select the destination Work Order, BOM Document, and Revision in the BOM Tree and then choose the Paste button to copy the records. The device IDs will automatically increment to avoid duplication as required.
Remove Select the records you want to remove and click the Remove button to effectively delete them from the project. You are not allowed, however, to remove devices that have symbols placed in the project.
Validation You can perform various validation checks on the data in the BOM Manager for any given Work Order, BOM Document, and Revision to ensure that your data does not violate common design practices. Select this option to display the Validation dialog where you can toggle on the specific checks that are relevant to your organization to perform those validation checks. The checks are organized into categories making it convenient to toggle on or off all checks within a given category.
Export BOM Data Exports the BOM data found in the selected Work Order, BOM Document, and Revision that you have selected in the BOM Tree to a CSV file.
Import Spreadsheets Select this option to display the Open Excel dialog where you can select which Excel files to import.

Refer to the Import a Spreadsheet topic for details on how to import spreadsheets.

Submit BOM Selecting this button displays the Submit BOM dialog letting you submit the BOMs for the selected work order.
