Editing Groups of Groups

A group of groups is used to create and maintain groups that have other network groups as members. Groups of groups are mainly used to aggregate network elements for reporting. An example of a simple group hierarchy is shown below.

The above diagram portrays a simple network group hierarchy. A datum network type, such as roads, are grouped into linear groups (routes) which in turn are grouped into the "All Routes" group. In this example "All Routes" is a group of groups.

In the group hierarchy shown above, datum network elements have been grouped to form groups of datums. These may be linear or nonlinear. These groups of datums have been further grouped to form groups of groups. For example, datum network elements have been grouped together to form a Regional Route (Group Type REG-). All of the Regional Routes within a discreet Region have been further grouped to form a group of groups which represents ALL Regional Routes within a given Region. This group of groups is named Region (Group Type REG) within the diagram. This enables an entire Region to be selected as a Region of Interest for reporting or querying.

In this example, several of the network groupings contain multiple group of group levels culminating in a group of groups which represents all network elements of the associated type. For example, the groups of groups named All Regions (LG) (Group Type ALL) represents ALL Local Roads.

Datum elements are added to groups as members. In the above example, elements are added to groups called Sections. The Sections are in turn added to high-level groups.

Note: Network geometry for groups of groups is not updated automatically when the network is edited. Discuss options with your system administrator for a schedule of deferred group of group spatial geometry updates.
