To add a concrete wall on-grid

To add a concrete wall by snapping to grid points, use the following procedure.

You must set up one or more grids in order to use "on-grid" layout features.

You must select the material as Concrete to layout concrete members and walls.

Note: When two walls come together to form a T shape, the wall that forms the "flange" of the T must be modeled as two separate walls. That is, it is necessary to have a node line in the wall where the "stem" of the T frames in. The DataCheck will indicate an error when this condition is modeled incorrectly.
  1. Either

    select Layout > Walls > Add On-Grid

    or

select the On-Grid tool from the Layout Wall dynamic toolbar.

The Add Concrete Wall On-Grid Mode dialog opens.
  2. Select the Framing type for the walls to be added:
    • Gravity - resists gravity loads only
    • Lateral - resists gravity loads and lateral loads in RAM Frame and RAM Concrete Analysis.
  3. Select the Type of walls to be added:
    • Cast-in-place - cast concrete walls
    • Tilt-up - precast concrete walls
  4. (Optional) For Tilt-up type walls, you may select to add a gap at either end of the wall. Gaps create an analytical seperation between adjacent walls. Refer to the RAM Frame manual for additional details.
  5. Select the density of the concrete in the Aggregate group:
    • Normal Weight Concrete
    • Light Weight Concrete
Note: This selection is used for reinforcement detailing. The unit weight material property is specified elsewhere.
  6. Specify the concrete material values:
    1. Type the wall Thickness.
    2. Type the concrete strength, f'c.
    3. Type the UW of the material and the UW for Self-weight.
Tip: The UW for Self-weight is typically increases slightly (around 5pcf) over the concrete material alone to account for reinforcing.
    4. Type the Poisson's Ratio.
    5. Type the Cracked Factor (membrane) and Cracked Factor (bending) ratios.

The stiffness of the wall based on the gross section properties is multiplied by this factor and used in the analysis in RAM Frame.

  7. Select the method for specifying the Elastic Modulus of the concrete:
    • Use Calculated Value - uses the program-calculated value based on the concrete strength
    • Use - use the user-provided value.
  8. Type the yield strength of Reinforcement used in the wall.
  9. For both Primary and Secondary faces, select the Face Exposure to use.
Note: The Primary face is defined as the face that faces away from the wall's local positive Y axis. Use Options > Show Wall > Primary Face to display the primary face.
  10. Select the Graphics Mode used to place the wall:
    Click… and then…
Single Click the plus sign cursor on a SnapTo point intersection defining one end of the wall. Move the cursor to the SnapTo point defining the second end of the wall and click the mouse button to place the wall.
Fence Fence an area in which walls will be place between existing columns.
  11. To place more walls, do either of the following and repeat steps 2 through 9 as needed:

    right-click

    or

    press <D>
