Select an ASTM A53 Grade B Pipe shape with an 8-in. nominal depth and a simple span of 16 ft. The loads are a total uniform dead load of 0.32 kip/ft and a uniform live load of 0.96 kip/ft. There is no deflection limit for this beam. The beam is braced only at the ends.

Validation

Ultimate moment:

w u = 1.2 ( 0.32  k/ft ) + 1.6 ( 0.96  k/ft ) = 1.92  k/ft
M u = 1.92 ( 16 ) 2 8 = 61.4  ft·k

Service moment:

w a = 0.32  k/ft + 0.96  k/ft = 1.28  k/ft
M a = 1.28 ( 16 ) 2 8 = 41.0  ft·k

Try a pipe 8 x-strong, which has a plastic section modulus, Zx = 31.0 in3.

The yield strength, Fy = 35 ksi

Compactness ratio: λ = D/t = 18.5

Determine the slender flange ratio limit from Table B4.1b: λ p = 0.07 E F y = 0.07 ( 29,000 ) 35 = 58.0 > λ (Compact)

By observation, λ < 0.45 E F y , so Section F8 applies.

λ p = 2.42 E F y = 2.42 29,000 46 = 60.8 > λ
M n = M p = F y × Z x = 35 × 31.0 = 1,090  in-k = 90.4  ft-k (F8-1)

The available flexural strength:

LRFD: ϕ b M n = 0.90 ( 90.4 ) = 81.4  ft·k

ASD: M n / Ω b = 90.4 1.67 = 54.1  ft·k
