Moments

This section gives the magnitude and location of the design moments with the associated capacities.

SettingDescription
Span This indicates the span for which the values are being listed. It includes Left for left cantilever, Right for right cantilever, and Span for main span.
Cond This indicates the load condition. It includes:
SettingDescription
PreCmp+ Construction Dead Load and Construction Live Load positive moment (top flange in compression). Values reported are from the support of cantilevers and at the maximum positive moment location for the mid-span of the beam (listed for composite beams only).
PreCmp- Construction Dead Load and Construction Live Load negative moment (bottom flange in compression). Values reported are from the support of cantilevers and at the maximum negative moment location for the mid-span of the beam (listed for composite beams only).
Init DL Construction Dead Load (listed for composite beams only)
Max + Maximum Positive Moment
Max - Maximum Negative Moment
LCo This is the controlling Load Combination for the span and condition indicated. The number refers to the load combinations listed in the Load Combination section above.
Mx* This is the ultimate moment for the indicated Span, Condition, and Load Combination.
Vx* This is the shear at the location of the ultimate moment for the indicated Span, Condition, and Load Combination.
@ This is the location of the indicated moment and shear, measured from the left end of the beam.
l This is the unbraced length for the segment containing the indicated moment. If the compression flange is fully braced throughout the segment, l is indicated with “---”, meaning there is no unbraced length to be considered.
αm

This is the equivalent uniform moment bending coefficient. If the unbraced length is zero αm is 1.0.

Type This is the designation of the controlling section capacity. Msx represents full noncomposite capacity. Mbx represents the bending capacity controlled by lateral torsional buckling. Mb represents the composite beam capacity with no reduction for shear load. Mbv represents the composite beam capacity reduced for shear load.
Capacity This is the controlling bending capacity of the beam segment including any pertinent phi factor. Refer to the type to determine what controlled the design.
Controlling This is the controlling set of values.
