Nomenclature

Dimensions of web openings

In the Modeler the location of the web opening is specified as the Horizontal Distance from the specified end of the beam segment (cantilever or span). The "i-end" indicates the left end and the "j-end" indicates the right end. In general, in RAM Steel Beam the location of the web opening is specified as the actual Distance along the beam, measured from the left end of the beam and accounting for any slope of the beam.

B is the length of a rectangular opening, H is the height of a rectangular opening. Diam is the diameter of a circular opening.

Offset from top of beam

Web openings are generally centered at the mid-depth of the beam, but they can be specified as being offset. The offset is specified by the user as the distance from the top of the beam to the top, center, or bottom of opening.

Reinforced web opening with A) stiffener on one side of web and B) stiffeners on both sides of web

Horizontal web stiffeners, when required, are always placed in pairs, one above the opening and one below the opening. Those pairs of stiffeners may be place on one side of the web only, or on both sides of the web, as required.
