Footing Eccentricities

If the column is located eccentric to the footing centroid the self-weight and surcharge on the footing is moved to the column location so that all the loads can be taken directly at the column. This shift in uniform load will produce both an axial load and a pair of moments.

The footing center of gravity along major-axis measured from the column centerline is:
F o o t C G maj = ( l 1 + l 2 ) 2 l 1 Equation 4-6
The footing center of gravity along minor-axis measured from the column centerline is:
F o o t C G min = ( w 1 + w 2 ) 2 w 2 Equation 4-7
The moment required to keep equilibrium after shifting the surcharge and self-weight to the column center is:
M maj C G = F o o t C G maj ( SelfWeight + UniformSurcharge ) M min C G = F o o t C G min ( SelfWeight + UniformSurcharge ) Equation 4-8
In addition to the moment on the column, there will be moments induced on the footing from the shear at the base of the footing, which is expressed as:
M majShear = V uColumn_maj × FootingThickness M minShear = V uColumn_min × FootingThickness Equation 4-9
