Stub Cantilevers

Stub cantilever, or those cantilevers that frame directly off of a column, wall or side of a beam without a back span, can be modeled, analyzed and designed.

The cantilever moment and reaction is applied to the supporting column, wall or beam. When a stub cantilever is framed off of the side of a beam the cantilever moment is applied to the supporting beam as a torsional force. The supporting beam is not designed for this torsion, although it is reported. Note that the torsion is tracked from member to member and is applied as a torsion or as a moment, as appropriate, to the supporting members. When the stub cantilever is skewed with respect to the supporting beam the stub cantilever applies both a moment component and a torsion component on the beam; the beam is designed for the applied moment.
