A distinction is made between horizontal braces and beam members. Horizontal braces are used to carry lateral forces between the vertical lateral resisting systems; they carry no gravity loads, cannot be assigned as reduced beam sections and are not braced by any of the gravity beams that they intersect. Other than these distinctions the horizontal braces are analyzed and designed in the same way lateral beams are.
