RAM Foundation assumes that steel columns are connected to the supporting footing through a base plate. Most codes permit the base plate to be used to increase the column/footing contact area by a specified percentage of the distance from the column face to the base plate edge. The resulting dimension using the increased contact area is called the Reduced Base Plate Dimension.
