RAM Structural System Help

Exported Data

The following data is exported or set when a beam is exported from RAM Structural System to a Westok AutoMate input file. This section is organized based on the dialogs in the Westok AutoMate program.

SettingDescription
Project Details The beam reference contains the RAM Job Name, Floor type and Beam number.
Plan Details

A beam is designated a roof beam if it carries Roof Live Load and is a noncomposite member.

Any beam with any slab edge on either side will be considered an edge beam.

The beam spacing provided will be equal to the effective flange width of the beam. This will not affect loads as no surface loads are exported.

All beams are exported as prismatic type.

Mass of beams is set to 0.0. Self weight of beams can be calculated in the RAM Structural System and applied as point and line loads to the Cellular Beam model.

Sloped beams are not exported with offsets but rather the true full length of the member along with the loads (perpendicular to the sloped beam) applied along the true member length are exported.

Deck that is within 60 degrees of perpendicular to the beam will be designated as perpendicular; otherwise it will be exported as parallel.

Slab openings are not exported.

Concrete Slab

Where a composite beam has a different deck orientation each side of the beam, the deck properties for the deck which is most close to perpendicular to the beam will be exported.

Where the deck orientation each side of a beam is the same but the properties differ, the deck properties for the deck with the smallest thickness of concrete above the crest will be exported.

Deck thickness is defaulted to 1.2 mm.

Deck yield strength is defaulted to 280 N/mm2

Deck Weight is set to 0.0 (Note that the applied line load from RAM will include the deck self weight if the engineer has included deck self weight for consideration in the RAM Manager.

Topping thickness is defaulted to 0.0

Deck type is specified as precast if it is a Bison deck, otherwise it is simply decking if composite or no slab if noncomposite.

Concrete cube strength is the fcu of the slab.

Concrete density is the unit weight of the slab. Note that the deck self weight can be considered as one of the calculated loads in RAM Structural System. When the deck self weight is considered in RAM Structural System, the unit weight of the deck is set to 0.0 and the calculated deck load is exported as a line load.

Mesh data is defaulted to A142 and 460 N/mm2.

Loading Details

The distributed and user applied loads are designated as additional loads in the Cellular Beam input file. These loads can be seen in the Cellular Beam program under the Additional Loads tab.

No surface loads are exported. Only the loads that are applied directly to the beam or distributed by RAM Structural System are exported. That is, the surface loads are not exported but rather the line loads on the beam, which result from the distribution of the surface loads, are exported.

Superimposed Dead Load is assumed to be the difference between the final Dead load and the construction dead load.

No beam axial loads are calculated or exported.

Deflection limit is defaulted to the controlling deflection limit set in the deflection criteria dialog box.

Natural frequency limit is defaulted to 3 hertz. No vibration checks are performed.

Service ability load combinations are set as 1.0 times each load factor.

Beam Restraints

All user defined brace points and framing beams/joists produce brace points along the supporting beam.

If the deck braces the top flange of the beam then the beam is designated as fully supported.

Effective length factor in each segment is defaulted to 1.0.

Shear Connectors

Stud dimension properties are taken directly from the composite deck information in the RAM Structural System.

The default spacing of studs is 300mm. See Section 8.5.2 for customization of this value. Default to 0.5 studs in each group (one stud every other trough).

For composite beams, stud type is defaulted to Nelson. See Section 8.5.2 for customization of this value.

No cost data is provided for the studs.

For Steel Beams, the program defaults to a single zone of studs for design in Cellular Beam, even if there are multiple segments on the beam (primary beam).

For Westok Cellular Beams, the program creates three Zones and, using the designed stud distribution, calculates zone lengths, stud spacing and Number in Group (number of rows) for each zone to create equivalent Westok stud data.

Beam Details

The code selection will be BS5950.

The beam Steel grade is based on the specified yield strength.

Stiffener grade is defaulted to 355 N/mm2. See Section 8.5.2 for customization of this value.

Steel Beams are exported as standard cut. Westok Cellular Beams are exported as ribbon cut.

If a section is already assigned to the member it will be exported as the initial beam otherwise a default size of UB406x140x46 is assumed.

For Steel Beams, top half depth and bottom half depth are exported as half of the total depth of the member.

For Westok Cellular Beams, the calculated or user specified top Tee and bottom Tee depths are exported.

Cell Details for Steel Beams See Section 8.5.2 for customization of these Default values.
  • Default Cell Diameter is 300mm.
  • Default Cell Spacing is 400mm.
  • Default Distance to first cell is 100mm.
  • Default Distance to last cell is 100mm.
  • Default Cell Shape is circular.
  • Default Infill Type is 'full infill'. This is not customizable.
  • Default Stiffener type is None.
  • Cell design automation is set to True by default.
  • The minimum and maximum cell diameters are defaulted to 0 (optimize).
  • The minimum and maximum beam depth is defaulted to 0 (optimize).
  • The minimum and maximum beam pitch is defaulted to 0 (optimize).
Cell Details for Westok Cellular Beams
  • The calculated or user defined Cell Diameter is exported.
  • The calculated or user defined Cell Spacing (Pitch) is exported.
  • The calculated Distance to first cell is exported.
  • The calculated Distance to last cell is exported.
  • The number of cells calculated during design is exported.
  • Default Cell Shape is Circular. If elongated cells were imported into RAM Steel Beam, they will be exported as elongated.
  • Default Stiffener type is None. If stiffeners were imported into RAM Steel Beam, they will be exported.
  • Cell design automation is set to False by default.

If the user has assigned a cell diameter to a beam, this value is used for both the minimum and maximum diameter.

If the user has indicated that the program should optimize the diameter, the minimum cell diameter is set from the Westok Cellular Beam criteria. This is accessible from either the RAM Steel Beam module under the criteria menu or from the RAM Manager defaults utility under the tools menu. Note that the Criteria – Westok Cellular Beam command is only available when the BS6399 Live Load Reduction code is selected. The maximum cell diameters is set to 1200 mm; the largest possible cell diameter.

If the user has assigned a pitch to a beam, this value is used for both the minimum and maximum pitch.

If the user has indicated that the program should optimize the pitch, the minimum pitch is set from the Westok Cellular Beam criteria. The maximum pitch is set to 1800 mm; the largest possible pitch.

Minimum and Maximum depth restriction can be set in the modeler. If the user sets these restrictions, they are exported. If the user has not set depth restrictions, the minimum depth is exported as 250mm and the maximum depth is exported as 1500mm.

Special Details

Ring stiffener default material is S275.

A default stiffener grade of S355 is assumed. See Section 8.5.2 for customization of this value.
