Web Opening Design

The design of web openings is performed automatically as part of the beam design process. This is done by either invoking Process - Design All or Process - View/Update , or by invoking any command or report that automatically performs a Design All. During the optimization process, sizes that do not satisfy the web opening requirements will be rejected. The resulting optimized size and shear studs will be those that satisfy all of the web opening requirements in addition to the regular beam strength and serviceability requirements.

When a View/Update is performed on a beam with openings the dialog box shows the Web Opening Data, with opening geometry and the stiffener and weld sizes. If the opening fails, that will be indicated as well. The web opening data can be modified by selecting the Modify>> button. In the Modify Web Opening dialog box the location, shape and size of the opening can be modified, similar to the way it can be changed in the Modeler. Note that in this dialog box, as in the Modeler, the distance to the opening is the horizontal distance measured from the specified beam segment end. Select the opening from the list, make the desired changes, and select the Change button. To return to the View/Update dialog box, select OK . If the geometry of the opening is thus modified and the Optimize command invoked, the program will re-optimize the beam and web stiffeners, if needed, using the modified opening geometry. The stiffener design can also be modified similarly. If the Analyze command is invoked after the opening geometry or stiffener design has been modified, the program will check that design (rather than optimizing the design) and give Design Warnings, if any.
