Add a Slab Opening

Enter the Slab overhang, measured from the centerline of the beam, in the Slab Overhang edit box.

Two methods are now available to assign a slab opening to the layout.

In Bay

  • To enter the Slab Opening in a particular bay click on the In Bay button. Using the target cursor click in the middle of the bay in which you wish to enter an opening. The opening can be expanded to adjacent bays by subsequently clicking in the adjacent bay. Manual modifications can be made to the slab edge by using the techniques described in Delete a Slab Opening and in the Add section below.

Add

  1. To enter the Slab Opening such that it will be offset to the "inside" of the beam while moving in the counter-clockwise direction, select the Left option button. To enter the Slab Opening such that it will be offset to the "inside" of the beam while moving in the clockwise direction select the Right option button. A slab opening entered on the wrong side of the beam might cause erroneous results.
  2. Click Add. The dialog box will disappear and the RAM Modeler will enter the Add Slab Opening Layout Mode.
  3. To add an opening as an offset from a beam, click on the point at which the slab opening assignment is to begin, move the mouse over a beam segment, a full beam, or a line of beams in which the slab opening will be added, and click again. A thin line will appear off from the beam in the applied direction. If no line appears, the line selected did not fall on a beam segment If the offset occurs on the wrong side of the beam, you can overwrite it by dragging the mouse in the opposite direction. An Add will overwrite slab assignments previously made on that beam segment. As an alternative to clicking on the beginning and end points, coordinates can be entered directly using the Keyboard Mode Coordinate Entry command. Alternatively, to add a freeform opening click the points in turn that define the vertices of the opening.
  4. Additional Slab Openings with the same overhang can be entered be repeating the above step. To change overhangs and add more Slab Openings, click the right mouse button, enter the new Overhang, and repeat the two steps above.
Tip: On layouts that are to be assigned Two-way decks, generally the most direct way to lay out slab openings is to create Grids and/or Construction Grids to generate the necessary SnapTo points, specify a Slab Overhang value of 0.0, and click from point to point until the slab opening polygon is complete. Note that this can also be done on layouts that are to be assigned One-way decks, but the In Bay command is usually more useful in that case.
