Wood design criteria for NDS
Note: Right-click on the spreadsheet area to display the General commands of the worksheet.
In this worksheet the parameters needed for wood design are provided:
- Le (effective span length of bending member)
- Lu (laterally unsupported span length of bending member)
The default value is (0) and the program will consider this length equal to the member length. It is used for the calculation of Le. - Li (length of the bending member between points of zero moment)
This distance should be defined only for glulam members considering the critical load condition for the calculation of the Volume Factor (Cv). If Li has its default value (0), the program will assume a value of Li=L. This assumption is on the conservative side and the maximum difference in relation to the exact value of the calculated Cv is in the order of 10%. - CL (beam stability factor)
If CL has its default value (0), the program will calculate the value of CL with Eq. 3.3-6. However, there are certain conditions as when d<=b or when members are laterally supported where the CL value is set to 1.0. (See Section 3.3.3 NDS Specification). In this case the user can define an override value. - Notch length
When the member is notched at the end, the distance the notch extends inside the inner edge of the support must be given. The default value is (0). - Notch depth
Notch depth, which shall not exceed 0.25d (beam depth). The default value is (0). - Notch down
Flag that determines if the notch is located in the upper or down part of the member. The user has to remind that notching of bending members shall be avoided whenever possible, especially on the tension side of the member. The default value is (No), which indicates that the notch will be located in the upper part of the member.
