Release Notes
What's Delivered in Update 3.4
This release includes updates for ProjectWise Explorer (Client Setups), ProjectWise Administrator (Admin Setups), and the ProjectWise Plug-in for Bentley Web Services Gateway (WSG).
There is no ProjectWise Server (Server Setups) in this release.
The ProjectWise Plug-in for WSG is now a separate download. Bentley Web Services Gateway (a prerequisite of the plug-in) is also available as a separate download.
ProjectWise Explorer Installation Notes
- As a rule, ProjectWise does not support running ProjectWise applications from different versions on the same computer. Specifically, please do not try to install ProjectWise Administrator CONNECT Edition Update 3.4 on a computer where ProjectWise Explorer CONNECT Edition Update 3.3 or earlier is also installed. Running two different versions of these particular applications on the same computer is known to cause unexpected and potentially unwanted behaviors.
- The Modify feature of the ProjectWise Explorer installer has been fixed. This means that you no longer have to completely uninstall and then reinstall in order to change what features are installed.
- If you need to install ProjectWise Explorer with AutoCAD 2016 integration, it is recommended that you launch the ProjectWise Explorer installer by double-clicking the Setup_ProjectWise_Explorerx64_10.00.03.4xx.exe file, rather than launching it from a command prompt, which may cause the installation to fail.
- If you have ProjectWise Explorer CONNECT Edition Update 2 or later installed along with the standalone ProjectWise Integration Module for AutoCAD 2018 (10.00.02.526), make sure you manually uninstall this integration module first before you upgrade your ProjectWise Explorer installation to the current version (which also includes AutoCAD 2018 integration).
- If you have ProjectWise Explorer installed with Office integration and you want to upgrade your version of Office, it is recommended that you uninstall ProjectWise Explorer and Office integration first, then upgrade to Office 365, then install the current ProjectWise Explorer with Office integration.
Compatibility with Previous Versions
Depending on the version you are upgrading from, you may still be able to use your older client with the new server, or your new client with an older server.

All ProjectWise applications on a single computer must be of the same release version. For example, you cannot have applications from both ProjectWise CONNECT Edition Update 3.4 and Update 3.2 installed on the same computer.
Installing ProjectWise Explorer from a Command Prompt (silent install)
You can install ProjectWise Explorer silently from a command prompt instead of using the installation wizard.
The basic silent installation command (without any extra instructions) installs the default feature set to the default installation location, just like the installation wizard would. With additional instructions you can customize which features get installed, change the default installation location, or change the location of the log file. You can also silently uninstall ProjectWise Explorer from the command prompt.
When you install ProjectWise Explorer using the wizard, many features are selected to be installed by default. When you install ProjectWise Explorer silently from a command prompt using the basic installation command, these same features will be installed by default.
For example:
"C:\PW_installs\Setup_ProjectWise_Explorerx64_10.00.03.431.exe" -silent
To find out which features you can include in your installation, open a command prompt with elevated privileges (run as administrator) and then enter the following command:
"C:\PW_installs\Setup_ProjectWise_Explorerx64_10.00.03.431.exe" ExportCliArgs=C:\PW_installs\FeatureIDTree.txt
This creates a file called FeatureIDTree.txt in the specified folder which contains a list of all the features and delivered integration modules that can potentially be installed through the ProjectWise Explorer installer. Open this file in a text editor and review which features you want to include in your installation command. Items with an asterisk * next to them (for example, ProjectWiseExplorerPackage*) are required features that will always be installed and therefore do not need to be specified in the command.
This is the full list of features that can be installed for this release:

Use the ADDLOCAL property in your installation command if you need to install a custom set of features (that is, a different set of features than are normally installed when using the basic installation command). When specifying which features to install, you must separate each feature by a comma. Any feature that is not explicitly specified after the ADDLOCAL property will not be installed, even if that feature is normally installed by default when using the basic installation command.
If you specify to install a feature that has subfeatures and you want to exclude (not install) one of the subfeatures, then you must also use the REMOVE property to specify which subfeature you do not want to install.
For example:
"C:\PW_installs\Setup_ProjectWise_Explorerx64_10.00.03.431.exe" ADDLOCAL=ProjectWiseExplorerPackage_DocumentCreationWizard, ProjectWiseExplorerPackage_ConnectPdfMarkupIntegration, ProjectWiseExplorerPackage_GetLink, ProjectWiseExplorerPackage_WorkflowRulesEngine, DgnNavigatorControlAx, Office2016 REMOVE=Office2016_PROJECT_2016_X64 -silent
This command installs ProjectWise Explorer, the Document Creation Wizard, PDF Markup Service integration, the Get HTTPS Link feature, the Workflow Rules Engine, the DGN Navigator Control, and integration for all installed Office 365 (2019/2016) applications except for 64-bit Microsoft Project.
Use the following command to change the default installation locations:
"C:\PW_installs\Setup_ProjectWise_Explorerx64_10.00.03.431.exe" PWE_INSTALLDIR="C:\ProjectWise\ProjectWise Explorer (x86)" PWE_INSTALLDIR64="C:\ProjectWise\ProjectWise Explorer (x64)" -silent
Use the following command to change the location of the log file:
"C:\PW_installs\Setup_ProjectWise_Explorerx64_10.00.03.431.exe" -log "C:\PW_installs\pweinstall.log" -silent
If you do not specify a location for the log file (that is, if you do not add the -log argument to the command), the installation log file will be saved by default to C:\Users\<user.name>\AppData\Local\Temp\ProjectWise_Explorer_CONNECT_Edition_<datetime>.log.
Use the following command to uninstall ProjectWise Explorer silently:
"C:\PW_installs\Setup_ProjectWise_Explorerx64_10.00.03.431.exe" -uninstall -silent

Use the Latest CONNECTION Client
The CONNECTION Client checks the Bentley Software Downloads website to see if there are any updates available for the Bentley applications that you currently have installed (including the CONNECTION Client itself), and then lets you decide which applications to update, and when you want to update them.
ProjectWise also relies on the CONNECTION Client for several workflows, including logging in to datasources with your Bentley IMS account, associating work areas to ProjectWise projects, and publishing to ProjectWise Share from Revit.
Bentley updates the CONNECTION Client frequently, and it is recommended that you update to the latest version of the CONNECTION Client whenever possible. Recent older versions of the CONNECTION Client should be OK to use in most cases, however it could cause problems in some workflows. For example, publishing to ProjectWise Share from Revit requires the latest version of the CONNECTION Client.
Thumbnail Image and File Properties Extractions on PDFs
Due to issues with Adobe Reader, extraction of thumbnail images and file properties from PDFs is currently not supported.
Rules Engine Notes
When the Rules Engine is configured to use server-side processing, note the following:
- Server-side processing requires that your server and ProjectWise Explorer client are both CONNECT Edition Update 3.2 or later. This means the Rules Engine will NOT use server-side processing if either your server or ProjectWise Explorer client is from a version prior to CONNECT Edition Update 3.2, even if server-side processing is enabled.
- The super user and rollback user are NOT used when the Rules Engine is using server-side processing.
- Update_TB
issues:
- The Update_TB command does not work on older Microsoft Office document formats (.DOC and .XLS) when using server-side processing.
- When server-side processing applies the Update_TB command on a Microsoft Office document, the document is updated with the latest title block data, but when you open the document, the fields that actually display the title block data will still show the old data because those fields are not automatically updated. The user will have to manually update the title block fields after they open the document. This is a Microsoft issue and has nothing to do with ProjectWise.
Standalone ProjectWise Indexing Service
The standalone ProjectWise Indexing Service is no longer delivered with ProjectWise Server Setups. If you are currently using a standalone ProjectWise Indexing Service from a previous CONNECT Edition release, you can continue to use it with this release. Otherwise, if you want to perform text extractions and host the catalog on a computer other than the main ProjectWise Design Integration Server, install a copy of ProjectWise Design Integration Server on a second computer and set up a head / tail server configuration. See the ProjectWise Implementation Guide for details.
Old ProjectWise Web Server vs New ProjectWise Web and ProjectWise Web View Cloud Services
ProjectWise Web Server is no longer delivered, however existing deployments of ProjectWise Web Server from V8i (SELECTseries 4) are still supported with this release (at the time of this writing).
If you need web-based access to ProjectWise datasources, consider using ProjectWise Web or ProjectWise Web View. Both of these Bentley cloud services are available in the CONNECT Center. ProjectWise Web provides secure, web-based access to selected ProjectWise work areas, and ProjectWise Web View provides secure, read-only web-based access to selected ProjectWise datasources.
To get to ProjectWise Web, go to the CONNECT Center (https://connect.bentley.com), then open your ProjectWise project (from the ProjectWise Projects section) and click the ProjectWise Web Connections tile. You can also just go directly to https://connect-projectwisewac.bentley.com and then select which ProjectWise project you want to enter (from the Projects tab).
To get to ProjectWise Web View, go to the CONNECT Center (https://connect.bentley.com) and click the ProjectWise Web View tile at the bottom of the page. You can also just paste this URL in your browser: https://connect-projectwisewebview.bentley.com/
ProjectWise Deliverables Management and Bentley Transmittal Services
ProjectWise Deliverables Management is the replacement product for Bentley Transmittal Services. While Bentley Transmittal Services is still in use in some organizations, the last version of ProjectWise that supports Bentley Transmittal Services is ProjectWise CONNECT Edition Update 3 (10.00.03.49), and there are no plans to extend this support into later versions of ProjectWise, as Bentley Transmittal Services will eventually be discontinued.
In older versions of ProjectWise where Bentley Transmittal Services is still supported, it is possible to enable and use Deliverables Management in a work area where Transmittals Management is already enabled and in use.
Currently there is no process for migrating content from a Transmittals Management-enabled work area to a Deliverables Management-enabled work area, however, there are plans to provide such a process when Bentley Transmittal Services is finally discontinued.
MicroStation Integration
Support for MicroStation CONNECT Edition does not currently include support for scalable reality mesh files (*.3sm).
AutoCAD Integration
- ProjectWise Explorer delivers basic integration for AutoCAD and all supported AutoCAD-based vertical applications. ProjectWise Explorer also delivers advanced integration for AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- When installing this integration module, you may get a warning that the installer cannot update certain files in use, because it cannot close the Windows Explorer process. It is safe to ignore this warning and restart your computer when installation is complete. These files will be updated when the computer is restarted.
- Due to a limitation of the AutoCAD API, when selecting a ProjectWise document from Recent Documents in AutoCAD, the document that was last opened from ProjectWise Explorer opens, rather than the selected document.
- For AutoCAD Civil 3D, the DMS variable #HOOKLESSREPATH is enabled by default (set to a value of 1), and can be disabled by setting it to a value of 0 (previously, HOOKLESSREPATH mode was always enabled and could not be disabled).
Microsoft Office Integration
- If using Microsoft Office 365, you must install Office 365 using Click-to-Run. No other installation methods are supported.
- To avoid any integration complications, it is recommended that you only have one version of Microsoft Office installed.
- Captive environment is not supported with this integration.
- In integrated Office applications, the File > Export > Change File Type command (File > Export > Save Project As File in Microsoft Project) is not integrated. (Outlook does not have this command.)
- In integrated Outlook, the following integrated commands are not working correctly and should be avoided:
- In integrated Excel, using the Insert > Object command on the ProjectWise tab may cause Excel to freeze or crash. Uninstalling or disabling Excel's Solver add-in will reduce the occurrence of this issue but may not prevent it in all cases.
- In integrated PowerPoint and Project, exiting the application when a new document needs to be created will require you to manually close the application after the new document is created.
ProjectWise Dependency Service
Dependency Viewer is an option of the ProjectWise Explorer installer. Installing this feature adds a Dependency Viewer tab to the Preview Pane in ProjectWise Explorer, which is used to show relationships or "dependencies" between documents in the datasource. Dependency Service Administrator and Dependency Service authoring capabilities, which were part of the original ProjectWise Dependency Service release, are no longer delivered or supported. This means you cannot create custom dependency maps in ProjectWise Explorer, and you cannot view any custom dependency maps that may have been created from a previous release.
AutoPLANT Projects
To enable support in ProjectWise for existing AutoPLANT V8i and AutoPLANT XM Edition projects, you must add the variable, LoginTokenUseLegacyCrypto=1, to the ProjectWise Design Integration Server's DMSKRNL.CFG file under the [TeamMate] section.

- If you need to add appenders for ProjectWise Orchestration Framework Service logging, edit this file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\LoggingServer\BentleyLoggingServer.exe.config
ProjectWise QuickView
ProjectWise QuickView is no longer delivered with ProjectWise Explorer. You can still use the Document > View option in ProjectWise Explorer, if you have a suitable viewer installed for the selected document. Users who are currently using ProjectWise QuickView from an earlier version of ProjectWise Explorer can continue to use it, but be aware that ProjectWise QuickView has been removed from all versions of ProjectWise Explorer that are available for download on the Bentley Software Fulfillment Center. We apologize for any inconvenience, however we do not expect this to be a major impact on your day-to-day operations in ProjectWise Explorer, as there are many free file viewer applications available for download from the Internet. For your convenience, we have provided a page on Bentley Communities that has links to some common file viewers:
