ProjectWise Geospatial Explorer Troubleshooting

  • If you uninstall ProjectWise Geospatial Explorer and the Scan Spatial Location for shapefile does not work in ProjectWise Spatial, uninstall ProjectWise Explorer, then reinstall ProjectWise Explorer (make sure the Spatial Extension option is turned on).
  • If you get the error "Unable to Retrieve Geometry from KML file" when trying to assign a spatial location from a KML file, it might be because the KML file contains MultiGeometry. Currently a spatial location can only be composed of a simple geometry. As a workaround, use a KML file that contains simple geometry.
  • If you cannot assign or modify spatial locations, make sure the user you are logged in with is a geospatial administrator. This privilege is set in ProjectWise Administrator (User Properties > dialog > Geospatial tab > This user is a Spatial Administrator).
  • If a thumbnail image does not display when View > Geometry Display > Thumbnail is used, it might be because the currently displayed background map is a spatial map. Make sure to create and use a geospatial background map in order to see the spatial location of the document displayed as thumbnail.
  • ESRI scanner for ESRI Personal Geodatabase only supports one coordinate system. If an ESRI Personal Geodatabase has more than one coordinate system the file will be skipped and an entry will be placed in the log file. When inside ArcMap iDesktop search dialog, in order to use the ArcMap view extent, the MXD document must be stored in ProjectWise and have a spatial location assigned to it.
  • After a geospatial datasource is upgraded, the geospatial administrator may have to manually change the maps that are assigned to certain folders and documents, if those maps were created using the old Geospatial Map Engine. (Because the Geospatial Map Engine is no longer delivered, any geospatial maps that were created with it will no longer be available after upgrading, and users will get an error if they select a folder or document that has an obsolete map assigned).

ProjectWise Geospatial Administrator Troubleshooting

  • If you have defined geospatial maps and are changing the Background Map Engine Name (for example, from localhost to MYMachineName) in the Datasource Geospatial Settings then these maps will not work anymore. Use the following procedure to fix the issue:
    1. Log in to your datasource in ProjectWise Administrator.
    2. Expand the Background Maps > Geospatial Maps node to view your maps.
    3. Right-click the map and select Delete and confirm the deletion when prompted. This will remove the map and the associated map definition document from the datasource. The originating map definition will remain available from the Bentley Geo Web Publisher Server (Available Maps).
    4. Then open the Select Map dialog and re-add the Bentley Geo Web Publisher map to the datasource. This will fix the problem, and you should then see your map in ProjectWise Explorer.
  • In ProjectWise Geospatial Administrator, if the Regenerate command (available when right-clicking a spatial map) is grayed out, or if the Add static CAD layer option from the Add Layer dialog is grayed out, make sure MicroStation V8i is installed. If it is, DGNextract.exe may not be properly registered. If this so, this will be logged in PWadmin.log, for example: 2008-11-11 15:41:10,590 ERROR [0x00000de0] pwise.spatial.navigation - Error occurred trying to retrieve a MicroStation installation - DgnExtract COM library may not be registered properly. To fix this error use ONE of the following solutions:
    • Delete DGNextract.exe from the ProjectWise\Bin directory and repair the ProjectWise Administrator installation using Add/Remove Programs.

      or

    • Re-register DGNextract.exe manually by opening a command prompt, navigating to the ProjectWise\Bin directory and entering: dgnextract.exe -regserver

      or

    • Uninstall ProjectWise Geospatial Administrator and ProjectWise Administrator, then reinstall ProjectWise Administrator and ProjectWise Geospatial Administrator.
  • You may get an "Unknown Error" when viewing the background map after having changed the Geo Web Publisher request port inside Bentley Geo Web Publisher Administration and also changing it inside the ProjectWise Geospatial Administrator.

Use ONE of the following workarounds to fix this issue:

    • workaround A
      1. Log in to your datasource in ProjectWise Administrator.
      2. Expand the Background Maps > Geospatial Maps node to view your maps.
      3. Right-click the map, select Delete and confirm the deletion when prompted.
    • workaround B
      1. Check out and open the XML file defining the map (Map Settings file) from ProjectWise and change the port.

For example, change port 8087 to 85 in the following:

        <Map URL="http://demosrv25449qbx:8087/23194c4f-2e66-43c0-a6db-60638f427f8a.mapdef"/>
Tip: You can find the path to the Map Settings file in the background map dialog.
      2. Then check in the file and reload the map inside ProjectWise Explorer.

This should allow you to view the map.
