If you simply configure and enable file caching, the cache directories you set up will become populated over time with files, as remote files are checked out or copied out by local users. However, you may prefer to pre-populate your caches, and then allow them to be updated on demand by user check outs and copy outs.

To pre-populate a cache, you run a command line utility called fetchfiles. You can run fetchfiles as often as you like to update the cache on a particular server.

fetchfiles is run on the caching server's computer. It copies files from the specified storage area into the cache directory on the caching server. You can cache the entire storage area, or if you know that only certain remote documents are used by a particular local set of users, you can cache certain folders of documents.
