When Do Attributes Get Updated?

With attribute exchange, attribute values can be updated in one of two directions:

  • from the database to the document
  • from the document to the database

To update attribute values from the database to the document, you can configure each application's attribute exchange rules so that attribute values are automatically updated in the document any time the document is:

  • opened
  • checked out
  • copied out
  • exported

Regardless of how these options are set, users can also manually update attribute values in the document from inside the integrated application, after they open the document.

To update attribute values from the document to the database, users can do so manually with the update command provided in their integrated application.

If you have recently imported a large number of documents into the datasource which contain tags that are linked to attributes in the datasource, you may want to run the Attribute Bulk Update tool that is delivered with ProjectWise Explorer. This way you can update the database all at once, rather than opening each document individually and updating the database one document at a time.

Note: If you set up attribute exchange rules so that attribute values are updated when Document is Exported, attribute values will only be updated in the document when a document is truly exported from ProjectWise. This means that if you select the Send to Folder option in either the Folder Export Wizard or Document Export Wizard in ProjectWise Explorer, attribute values will not be updated when those documents are downloaded to the specified local folder.
