What is Mass Haul Diagram
Mass diagrams determines the average haul, free haul, and overhaul on a given segment of roadway. It also tells us the contractors and inspectors the quantity of material moved and how far it can be economically moved.
Basic definition of Haul, Average Haul, Overhaul, and Free Haul
Mass Haul diagram is used to display a graphical representation of Earthwork.
- Haul- The transportation of excavated material from its original position to is final location in the work or other disposal area. This is also an authorized haul.
- Average Haul- Determined from mass diagram. Average haul is the area of the mass diagram representing the number of cubic yard stations of haul between balance points divided by the ordinate of the mass which the yardage is hauled.
- Overhaul- The authorized hauling of excavation beyond the specified free-haul distance.
- Free Haul- Average haul for project that is free.
There are three different methods to create Mass Haul Diagram as given below.
- Interval - Allows you to calculate Mass Haul Ordinate or Cumulative Volume at any desire distance interval.
- - Requires A Plan Boundary group previously created to create the Mass Haul Diagram and Report at the defined length of the previously created Plan Boundaries.
- Cross Section Boundary- Requires a Civil Cross section Boundary group previously created to create the Mass Haul Diagram and Report at the defined interval of the previously created Civil Cross Section Boundaries.

In Mass Haul report the Mass Ordinate Units are in Cubic Feet or Cubic Meters. We can show units in Cubic Yards by using the Format option. To convert unit to Cubic Yard, select Tools > Format Options and check the "Convert to Cubic Yard" check box.
