Edit Cant

You can access this dialog from the following:

  • Ribbon: OpenRail Modeling > Rail > Cant.

Opens Cant Editor. Using the cant editor you can see the calculated cant and can change the applied cant value.

In the editor on the left hand side pick top element (Cant Range) to display whole diagram or choose one of the speed table sections. The sections are read from the stations defined in the speed table and can contain multiple or no curve set.

The Cant (Rail Superelevation) diagram at the top is display only. Right click on the Cant diagram to display the Superelevation Display List dialog.

The fields in the editor can be customized so unused or unwanted fields can be hidden. This is accomplished by right-clicking on any header in the tabular data area to open the pop-up menu.

Note: After creation, to take effect, use the Assign Cant to Corridor tool to create the Vertical Point Control.

Editor Options

Toggle Cant Diagram: Shows or hides the cant diagram.

Toggle Virtual Sections: On the section display list (to the left), hide the sections that do not have any cant. These are typically sections that do not contain any curve.

Validate Data: Validate the cant values against chosen design values. Use this dialog box to define minimum and maximum boundaries for the values in the table. The table entries will be highlighted when the value is out of the defined limits.

Existing Cant: Creates and displays the actual existing cant, with Inner/Outer/Center, etcetera cant options.

Existing Cant Workflow
  • If the create centerline from rails tool is used, then the existing cant for that centerline is automatically created, and displays automatically in the horizontal regression space view. The cant uses center rotation as there is no geometry to use for the Inside/Outside rotation methods.
  • Once horizontal geometry for the centerline is created, a profile applied (profile MUST be applied), speed table created and cant applied, then when the Edit Cant tool is used, a toolbar button, Select Existing Rail,s becomes available.
  • Use this button to select the Left and Right Existing Rails. The cant according to the cant rotation method applied when applying the cant to the geometry displays in the diagram for the left and right rail.
  • Display in curvature diagram.

    Import rail readings from existing data and sort points.

    Using the OpenRail Modeling > Rail > Regression > Convert Rails to Centerline tool select the centerline geometry.

    Select left rail then select right rail.

    Centerline displays based on left and right rail.

    Select curvature diagram to perform horizontal curvature on centerline.

    Select centerline then Display Existing Cant, if it exists.

    Select regression view to show standard regression curve.

    Shows curvature changes with station. Also shows existing cant.

    The existing cant is read-only to use as a guide when performing horizontal regression plus helps to determine points for centerline geometry.

  • Display in cant editor.

    Perform horizontal regression on centerline.

    Apply speed table.

    Select create cant to create cant for the speed table.

    Select edit cant.

    Locate the cant element.

    Cant editor displays.

    Select add existing cant button .

    Select existing left and right rail used to create the centerline.

    Superelevation display list, red is left rail existing cant and yellow is the right rail existing cant. Turn on or off, if desired.


    Select inside rail which is the default.

    Create cant. Specify rotate about inside rail.

    Select Edit cant. Select existing cant.

    Select existing left rail then select existing right rail.

    Superelevation display list, red is left rail existing cant and yellow is the right rail existing cant. Turn on or off, if desired.
