Label Organizer

The Label Organizer automates the movement of existing labels across Named Boundaries in Plan Models. It supports labels placed via Annotation Groups or the Civil Labeler but does not create labels or edit label contents.

Tech Preview

Label Organizer is currently offered as a Tech Preview feature. Functionality, behavior, and availability may change in the future.

Requirements

  • OpenRoads Designer 2025
  • A ProjectWise Connected project
  • A stable and reliable Internet connection
  • At least one Named Boundary in your Plan Model (can be a in a Reference File as well)
  • Write access to the opened DGN file

Installation

  1. Launch the OpenRoads Designer 2025 installer.
  2. In the Configure options, select Label Organizer.

Launching the Tool

  1. Open a Plan Model that contains Named Boundaries.
  2. Go to the Drawing Production ribbon tab.
  3. Click Label Organizer.

Capabilities

Label Organizer provides flexible behavior settings and evaluates surrounding objects to improve label placement.

  • Label Organizer moves labels created with Annotation Groups and Civil Labeler located in Named Boundaries.
  • Allows you to set label behavior: Point, Line, Area, or Ignore.
    • Point: Attempts to move labels freely. Recommended for labels that describe point-like objects, such as drainage nodes, ends of lines, and station/offset callouts.
    • Linear: Attempts to move labels along a linear element. Recommended for drainage conduit callouts without leaders or bearing callouts on geometry.
    • Area: Attempts to move labels so they stay within an area. Recommended for drainage area callouts without leaders.
    • Ignore: Excludes a label from moving but still treats it as an obstacle for other, movable, labels. This is the default option when upgrading a WorkSpace, upgrading a WorkSet, creating a new Civil Label, or creating a new Annotation Definition.
  • Objects considered for conflicts/obstacles:
    • Displayed Levels
    • Displayed References Files
    • Named Boundaries limits, including those in Reference Files.
    • Civil Labels and Annotation Definitions set to “Ignore”
    • Civil Labels and Annotation Definitions in Reference Files.
    • MicroStation labels and text in the active file or in Reference Files
  • Undo to revert all label movements made in a single Label Organizer execution.

Limitations

  • Does not create or edit labels.
  • Does not move basic MicroStation text or labels (only checks for conflicts).
  • Does not move labels that exist in Reference Files.
  • Does not support Cross Section or Profile models.
  • Does not adapt to project-specific requirements or local drafting standards.

How to Use

  • Open your Plan Model with Named Boundaries.
  • Launch Label Organizer from the Drawing Production tab.
  • Review labels created via Annotation Groups or Civil Labeler.
  • Select either a Named Boundary or Named Boundary Group from the dialog.
  • Run the tool to move labels based on your settings.
  • Use Undo to reverse all changes made in the earlier execution.

Best Practices

Set default Organizer Behavior at the WorkSpace/WorkSet level to ensure consistency across projects.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Which models are supported? Only Plan Models with Named Boundaries.
  • Is internet required? Yes.
  • Is a ProjectWise Connected project required? Yes. Label Organizer is a feature of Bentley Infrastructure Cloud.
  • Can it create labels? No, it only moves existing labels.
  • Can it move labels in Reference Files? No, only labels in the active DGN are moved.
  • How does Undo work? It reverts all label movements made in each run of the Label Organizer at a time.
  • Can behavior be preset? Yes, defaults can be set at the WorkSpace/WorkSet level.
  • Does it follow drafting standards? We have trained the algorithm to mimic drafting techniques from user-provided data. However, Label Organizer applies consistent logic regardless of local standards.
  • I repeatedly get results I do not like. What should I do? Make sure your labels are set to the correct Organizer Behavior setting.
  • I ran the tool, but nothing happened. What should I do? First, make sure your labels are set to the correct Organizer Behavior. Second, the Organizer may have not found a solution or already sees your labels are organized.
