Side-by-Side Installation

Starting with the release of OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 , side-by-side installation will be supported for Major Releases. This means:

Major Releases can be installed alongside each other.
Minor Release updates will upgrade a Major Release. Therefore, Major and Minor Releases of the same version cannot be installed side-by-side.

You can simultaneously run OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 and OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition version on the same machine. By default, OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 will install alongside any previous OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition. To remove previous versions of OpenPlant Support Engineering , a manual uninstall is required. Please refer to The application version naming FAQ for more information on major and minor releases.

Note: OPM - OPIM in-session integration only works if you have a matching major versions of the two products, or else the generated in-session option remains gray out in pipeline manager.

Configuration and Installation

The default installation directory and configuration for OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 will be different from previous releases. When installing side-by-side, you can work on two distinct configurations, defined during the OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition and OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 installations.

Note: OpenPlant configuration is version specific. It is recommended that two or more side-by-side installations do not share a common configuration. If you wish to carry forward content (datasets or WorkSet files) into the newly installed version, follow the guidance for migrating and upgrading datasets and WorkSets. Once upgraded, all users should use the same version of the application on a WorkSet.

Default Installation Path

OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 follows the same installation pattern for its major components and shipped configurations as previous releases, with the release year included for differentiation. This allows for side-by-side installations.

Default Preference Folder Path

A preference folder is created for each installed version. These folders are identified by the Major Release version number. For example:

C:\Users\<user.name>\AppData\Local\Bentley\<product_name>\24.0.0\

Sharing Configurations Between Versions

To have OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 work with the same configuration as the OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition, complete the following tasks during and after installation:

Set the Default Delivered Configuration Directory During Installation

During the installation of OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 , define the same directory path as the Delivered Configuration directory of OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition.

Default Delivered Configuration directory path:
C:\ProgramData\Bentley\ OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 \
Change this path to:
C:\ProgramData\Bentley\OpenPlant CONNECT Edition\

Note: If you use a custom directory for the Delivered Configuration during the OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition installation, select the same custom directory during the installation of OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 .

Set Custom Configuration Directory During Installation

If you wish to share your existing Custom Configuration during the installation of OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 :

Set the directory path to match the Custom Configuration directory of OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition.
Browse to the same directory during the OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 installation.

Note: Exercise care when using network configurations or ProjectWise-managed workspaces. Create new configurations from previous software versions, clearly indicating the version or year in paths for clarity and differentiation.

Copy and Paste the "prefs" Folder After Installation

To use Preferences and User Configuration from a previous version, follow these steps:

Launch and Close OpenPlant Support Engineering to set default preferences at:
C:\Users\<user.name>\AppData\Local\Bentley\OpenPlantSupportEngineering\24.0.0
Copy the "prefs" directory from the previous version:
C:\Users\<user.name>\AppData\Local\Bentley\OpenPlantSupportEngineering\10.0.0
Paste it into the new version's directory to overwrite the 2024 "prefs" directory:
C:\Users\<user.name>\AppData\Local\Bentley\OpenPlantSupportEngineering\24.0.0

After completing these steps, OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 should work seamlessly with existing configurations, shared between OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition and OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 versions.

Note: You must follow Step 3 every time there is a change in preference settings in the OpenPlant Support Engineering CONNECT Edition that you wish to apply to OpenPlant Support Engineering 2024 .
