Cartographic Style Intersections

When a map has more than one classification with cartographic styles defined, the Cartographic Styles Intersections icon will appear on the right side of the thematic classes tool bar.

Selecting the intersection tool opens the Cartographic Styles Intersections dialog which is used to control the display priority of each class that has been defined with a cartographic style.

Note: White style components do not display in the dialog.

The top section of the dialog shows classes with cartographic styles listed in the first column. The individual components of the style are shown horizontally and in a priority order.

The bottom section of the dialog enables you to preview the priorities on a selected class. Each class displays as a vertical line, while the class being reviewed is shown as the horizontal line. The display shows what each intersection will look like when the selected class crosses other classes.

Display priority can be made on a per-component basis, groups of components or the entire style if the components are merged together. To merge components together, choose the Merge tool. The Merge tool will combine the selected component with the one to the right. This results in a component group that will be drawn at the same time.

To break down groups of components, use the Split Components tool.

Note: Linear end caps are visible when components are merged. To prevent endcaps from showing, split the components.

The display priority determines the drawing order of each style, component group or individual component. The higher the display priority the later the component is drawn. Therefore, Priority 1 is drawn first while Priority 4 is drawn last. To increase or decrease the display priority select the left or right arrows in the grid.

Note: If two classes have the same priority, they are drawn in the order they appear in the map.
