Once a file has been attached or imported into GenerativeComponents, the geometry is visible in the View, but is inaccessible. In order to use the geometry contained in the imported file, the elements in the file must be promoted from MicroStation elements to GenerativeComponents nodes. Promoting geometry is a way for GenerativeComponents to analyze the selected geometry and recreate it within your model. Once this has been done the geometry can be freely manipulated or referenced.

There are three options for promoting elements to GenerativeComponents nodes, each of which are suited for various needs and are discussed in the following sections.
