To Add Parametric Cells to Curtain Wall Definitions

Parametric Cells can be used as curtain wall panels. For it to work, the cell name has to follow a specific naming convention, and have its Family | Part assignment be set to have matching names.

Format: <type>_<NOE>_Definition_<name>

Where:
  • type is the type of cell being used, Vertex, Edge, or Face
  • NOE is "Number of Edges"
    1. For Faces, the most common use is 4
    2. Edge will always be 2
  • "Definition" is a set string which tells the curtain wall tool that this is a panel definition

Example: Face_4_Definition_windows-Sam

The following steps can be used to add a parametric cell to the Curtain Wall definition.

  1. Select Data/Reporting > Reports > Catalog Editor.
  2. In the catalog items panel (left), navigate to the Curtain Walls catalog type. Expand Curtain Walls, and select the Curtain Wall | Panel catalog item.
  3. Right click and select New Catalog Item from Components Center. If New Catalog Item from Components Center is disabled, you need to add the ParaDef property to the Curtain Wall | Panel definition:
    1. Right click on Curtain Wall | Panel, and select Properties.

The Catalog Type Definition dialog opens. The Curtain Wall | Panel definition is displayed.

    2. Find ParaDef in the list of Available Definitions (left), and click the right arrow to add it to the Selected Definitions (right).
    3. Click OK.

New Catalog Item from Components Center is enabled.

  4. Select New Catalog Item from Components Center again.

The Components Center Explorer dialog opens.

  5. Search for a component to use as a panel. Click Select to continue.

Components Center Explorer closes and you are returned to Catalog Editor. You are prompted to select Destination, File Name and UDL File specifications.

  6. Select the CurtainWall_Panels.xml file. Click OK to continue.

The selected parametric cell is added as a new catalog item within the Curtain Wall | Panel definition (left).

  7. With the new item selected, find the Panel | Part property and change its value to have matching family and part names. For instance, Window::Window.
  8. Right click on the new catalog item and select Rename.
  9. Follow the naming convention described above and rename the new catalog item.
  10. Click Save at the top of the Catalog Editor dialog to save the changes to the catalog system.

    The catalogs are automatically reloaded.

You are now ready to use the new component as a selectable panel item when placing or modifying curtain walls.
