OpenBridge Modeler

Truss Support Designer Module

Used to parametrically generate a truss support connection, commonly used in electrical substations.

This tool can also be used for many other purposes.

Accessed from:
  • Ribbon: Steel > Home > Steel Connections > Substation Gallery
  • ... [Substation Structural Objects] > Truss Support Designer Module

Bottom plate tab

Used to specify geometric values for the bottom plate in the connection.

SettingDescription
Size Sets/displays the overall plate dimensions. Displayed dimensions are for information only. The dimensions are determined by the bolt number, edge distances, and spacing in each direction.
  • Thickness - Sets the bottom plate thickness.
  • Length - Displays the length of the bottom plate.
  • Width - Displays the width of the bottom plate.
Distribution in Width / Length Direction
  • Number - Specifies the number of bolts in each direction along the plate.
  • Edge Distance - Sets the center-to-edge distance in the respective plate direction. Denoted with 1 and 3 in the diagram.
  • Distance Between - Sets the bolt-to-bolt spacing in the respective plate direction. Denoted with 2 and 4 in the diagram.
Hole/Slot
  • Hole Diameter - Specifies the bolt hole diameter.
  • Work Loose - Sets the clearance between bolt diameter and hole diameter.
  • Slot Rotation - Sets the angle to rotate the slot direction.
  • Slot Length - Specifies the length of slotted holes. Leave a zero value for non-slotted holes.

Bolt/Weld tab

Used to specify bolt and weld material data, as well as select the connection method used.

SettingDescription
Bolt
  • Without Bolts - When on, bolts are not included in the connection. Disables the Bolt Style option.
  • Bolt Style - Selects the bolt style from the drop-down list.
Bolt Style Selects the bolt style from the drop-down list.
Turn Bolts When on, the bolts are turned before insertion.
Weld Style Selects the weld style from the drop-down list. The Weld option must be on to enable the Weld Style drop-down list.
Weld Defines the welding of the brace. Settings found here are enabled when Welded is checked on the dialog's Hole tab.
  • Weld Style - Selects the weld style from the drop-down list.
  • Two Sides Welding - When on, the selected Weld Style is applied to two sides of the brace.
  • Three Sides Welding - When on, the selected Weld Style is applied to three sides of the brace.
  • L-Shaped Welding - When on, the selected Weld Style is applied in an L shape on the brace.
Create Holes/Slots with Bolts When on, bolt objects are also be created for the connection, along with the bolt holes.
Create just Holes/Slots When on, only the holes are created for the bolted connection.
Weld When on, welds are used instead of bolts. Enables the Weld Style drop-down list.

Support plate 1 tab

Used to specify geometric values for the end support plate.

SettingDescription
Thickness Sets the thickness of the plate.
Bottom Width Sets the total plate width where it is joined to the bottom plate. Denoted with 1 in the diagram.
Top Width Sets the width at the top, between the chamfers. Denoted with 2 in the diagram.
Chamfer Sets the height of the chamfer corner. Denoted with 3 in the diagram.
Height Sets the height from the support plate to the chamfer. Denoted with 4 in the diagram.
Dis to Edge Sets the distance from the edge of the bottom plate to the face of the support plate. Denoted with 5 in the diagram.
Gap Sets a clearance gap from the support plate to the end of the truss member. Denoted with 6 in the diagram.

Support plate 2 tab

Used to specify geometric values for the end support plate.

SettingDescription
Thickness Sets the thickness of the plate.
Bottom Width Sets the total plate width where it is joined to the bottom plate. Denoted with 1 in the diagram.
Top Width Sets the width at the top, between the chamfers. Denoted with 2 in the diagram.
Chamfer Sets the height of the chamfer corner. Denoted with 3 in the diagram.
Height Sets the height from the support plate to the chamfer. Denoted with 4 in the diagram.
Gap Sets a clearance gap from the support plate top surface to the face of the truss member. Denoted with 5 in the diagram.
Dis to Edge Sets the distance from the edge of the bottom plate to the face of the support plate. Denoted with 6 in the diagram.

Group tab

Used to create a new OpenBridge Modeler group with the Substation Gallery objects.

SettingDescription
Create Group Select this option to select additional shapes. Separate Substation Gallery objects are created.

Assignment tab

Used to assign elements in the connection to a material, display class, area class, part family, level, etc.
