OpenBridge Modeler

Standard Handrail - Post tab

Used to configure the post connection in standard handrails.

Dimension Setting

SettingDescription
Current Handrail Sets the connection type of the current handrail, selected from the drop-down list.
  • Apply To All – When clicked, applies the current handrail settings to all handrail objects
Distribution Select the method of distributing the posts:
  • Normal – All posts are spaced at equal distance from the first to last posts.
  • Adjust Start – The first post spacing is adjusted so the Post Distance is used between all other posts.
  • Adjust End – The last post spacing is adjusted so the Post Distance is used between all other posts.
  • Adjust Both – The first and last post spacings are adjusted equally so the Post Distance is used between all other posts.
  • No Post – No post is spaced.
Posts inside If this field is checked, the end posts are moved to the inside. The post distances in the first and last segment are decreased by the value specified for the offset of the railing head.
Post Distance Sets the center-to-center spacing to use for the posts.
  • Maximum – When clicked, uses the Post Distance as a upper limit when distributing the posts by the method selected in the Distribution drop-down list.
Edge Offset Sets the edge distance to the first post from the end of the handrail (or handrail corner).
Current Post Activates the selected post number for applying the parameters.
Post Offset Sets the offset distance from the standard center line (by distribution method) of the currently selected post. This value can be positive or negative.
Visible When checked, makes the currently selected post visible in the model (turning the option off can help with congested models).
With Connection When checked, sets the selected current post appear with connection in the model.

End Conditions

SettingDescription
Sphere Radius Sets the radius used for sphere joint a posts and horizontal rails.
End With Hand Rail Sets the type of end cut between the post top and the top rail:
  • Align As Is
  • Straight Cut
  • Complex Cut
  • Boolean Cut

Gap – Enabled for Cut types. Sets the gap distance between the post end and the top rail at the joint.

End With Rails Sets the type of end cut between the post and inner or bottom rails:
  • Align As Is
  • Straight Cut
  • Complex Cut
  • Boolean Cut
  • Drill Through
  • Boolean Cut with Split

Gap – Enabled for Cut types. Sets the gap distance between the post and the rail at the joint.

Radius – Enabled for Drill type. Sets the for the holes on rail element that accommodate the filler rods.

Where two pieces or fabrication needed the modification option "Boolean Cut with Split" suits to either Bottom or Mid rails, where they are first split at Posts, and then cut at posts, followed boolean operation at posts.

Connections

Note: Settings in Connections tab vary based on the Connection Type selected.
SettingDescription
Current Handrail Sets the connection information of the current handrail, selected from the drop-down list.
  • Apply To All – When clicked, applies the current handrail connection settings to all handrail objects.
Connection Type Sets the method of connection between the handrail post base and the supporting shape:
  • None – No connection is specified. The post shape is cut at the base.
  • Top Mount – Specify the options for a post base plate bolted connection.
  • Side Mount Plate – Specify the options for a side plate bolted connection.
  • Side Mount Post – Specify the options for a mounted post connection.
  • Side Mount Angle – Specify the options for angled side mount connection.
  • Side Mount Both – Specify the options for a mounted plate and post.
Side Offset Enabled for None and Side Mount Plate Connection types. Sets the centerline offset between the supporting shape and the handrail post.
Cut Along support Enabled for None Connection type. When checked, slopes the post bottom with the supporting member. When unchecked, a square cut is used at the end where the centerline of the post meats the surface of the supporting member.
Vertical Offset Enabled for Side Mount Plate and Side Mount Post Connection types. Sets the distance between the top of the supporting shape and the connection bolt centerline.
Radius Enabled for Side Mount Plate Connection type. Sets the radius for bent element of side connection.
Mount To Post Enabled for Side Mount Angle Connection type.
Switch Handrail Side Enabled for Side Mount Both Connection type. When checked, changes the connection side.
Post Face Side Enabled for Side Mount Plate and Side Mount Post Connection types.
Flip Leg Enabled for Side Mount Both Connection type.
Support Side Enabled for Side Mount Both Connection type. Sets the support to either Beam or Post.
Plate Specifies the details for the connection plate.
  • Length – Indicates the length of the plate.
  • Width – Indicates the width of the plate.
  • Thickness – Sets the thickness pf the plate.
  • Offset (L/T) – Sets the longitudinal and transverse offsets.
  • As Polyplate – When checked, sets as a ployplate.
  • Rotate Flat Steel – When checked, rotates the flat sheet. Enabled when As Polyplate is unchecked.
Bolts Sets the bolted connection details.
  • Bolt Type – Sets the bolt type from the pull down list.
  • Dia/Workloose – Sets the diameter of the bolt and the clearance between bolt and hole diameter, respectively.
  • Additional Length – Sets additional length to the bolts extension outside the nut.
  • Slot length – Sets the slot length of longitudinal direction.
  • Rotate – When checked, rotates the slot axis.
  • Turn – When checked, turns the bolt before insertion.
  • Weld – When checked, sets the weld plate. The Bolts and Spacings settings are disabled.
Longitudinal Spacing Specifies the bolted connection layout dimensions parallel to the rail.
  • Number – Sets the number of bolts to be placed on the X axis.
