To place the beam group

To specify a standard concrete section for all the beams in the beam layout, do the following.

You must have placed the beam group for your bridge.
  1. On the Home ribbon tab, select the Place Beam tool in the Superstructure group.


  2. Select Girder as the Feature Definition.
  3. In the view window, do the following:
    1. select the beam layout
      Tip: It may be helpful to switch to isometric view or otherwise rotate the view if the deck or other objects make selecting a beam layout difficult.
    2. data point to accept the selection
    The Beam Definition dialog opens.
    Note: The option to Apply To All Beams should be checked.
  4. In the Beams list, select Beam-L (left edge beam) in SupportLine1 - SupportLine3.
  5. Type 2.00 in the Beam Minimum Haunch field. Make sure that this option is checked as well.
  6. Select Built-Up from the Beam Sections drop-down menu. A new drop-down list appears with the built-up shape elements.
  7. Specify the web dimensions and material along the beam:
    1. Select Web from the built-up shape elements drop-down list.
    2. In the first (only) table row, type 0.4375 in the Thickness cell.
    3. Type 42.0000 in both the Start Value and End Value cells.
    4. Select Straight plate girders from the drop-down list in the Material cell.
    5. Click the Insert Row After button (). A new row is added copying the values from the previous row.
    6. Type 0.3000 in the Relative Location cell.
    7. In the Location Type drop-down, select Ratio by span.
    8. Type 0.5000 in the Thickness cell.
    9. Click the Insert Row After button (). A third row is added copying the values from the second row.
    10. Type 0.7000 in the Relative Location cell.
    11. Type 0.4375 in the Thickness cell.
  8. Specify the top flange dimensions and material along the beam:
    1. Select Top Flange from the built-up shape elements drop-down list.
    2. In the first (only) table row, type 0.7500 in the Thickness cell.
    3. Type 14.0000 in both the Start Value and End Value cells.
    4. Select Straight plate girders from the drop-down list in the Material cell.
    5. Click the Insert Row After button (). A new row is added copying the values from the previous row.
    6. Type 0.3000 in the Relative Location cell.
    7. In the Location Type drop-down, select Ratio by span.
    8. Type 1.1250 in the Thickness cell.
    9. Click the Insert Row After button (). A third row is added copying the values from the second row.
    10. Type 0.7000 in the Relative Location cell.
    11. Type 0.7500 in the Thickness cell.
  9. Specify the bottom flange dimensions and material along the beam:
    1. Select Bottom Flange from the built-up shape elements drop-down list.
    2. In the first (only) table row, type 1.1250 in the Thickness cell.
    3. Type 16.0000 in both the Start Value and End Value cells.
    4. Select Straight plate girders from the drop-down list in the Material cell.
    Note: Top and bottom cover plates are not used in this tutorial, though they are added in a similar manner as in the previous steps.
  10. Copy the beam parameters to all the remaining beams:
    1. Right-click on Beam-L in SupportLine1 - SupportLine3 and select Copy To from the pop-up menu. The Beam Copy dialog opens.
    2. Click the empty checkbox beside SupportLine1 - SupportLine3 to select all the beams within this span group (multiple spans as these are continuous beams).
    3. Click Copy By Ratio.
    The built-up beam section and materials are used for all beams in all spans. The ratio of beam length is used to specify the flange cut-off locations.
  11. Click OK.
