Creating Print Definitions

When you first open Print Organizer, the default print set name and root folder is named Untitled. These two items will eventually inherit their names from the new print set name. Typically, you click the Add Files to Set icon from the toolbar to add files to Print Organizer, but you can also drag DGN, DWG, raster, and PDF files from Windows Explorer, models from the Models dialog, or links from Explorer into Print Organizer.

Here are a few things you should consider before adding files to Print Organizer:

  • The printer driver — It is best to select the printer driver before adding files to Print Organizer, since changing the printer driver can change the paper size and other related settings. Printer drivers can also have a print style associated with them, if so, even if the paper size didn’t change when you changed printers, you could end up changing your print definition settings.
  • Fixed or variable print definitions (from design files) — Print Organizer’s Preferences dialog allows you to switch between fixed mode and variable mode. If you switch modes, you are required to close and reopen Print Organizer.
  • The Model Selection method — The Model Selection method determines which models are used when creating print definitions from design files and can be set in the Preferences dialog, in a print style, or by clicking Manually Specified Options in the Create Print Definitions dialog (The Manually Specified Options button is disabled when creating variable print definitions).
  • The Fence Creation method — The Fence Creation method defines the print area in design files and can be set in a print style or by clicking Manually Specified Options in the Create Print Definitions dialog (fixed print definitions only). It is best to set up the fence creation methods prior to creating print definitions. This is especially true if you are creating a print definition for each matching shape or cell, since you cannot create additional print definitions when modifying a fixed print definition.
  • Print Styles — Print styles are named sets of print definition properties that allow you to create print sets in a consistent and automated manner. Print styles can contain both Model Selection and Fence Creation methods, and are required when creating variable print definitions.

To add files to Print Organizer, you can:

  • Click the Add Files to Set icon from the toolbar or select File > Add Files to Set from Print Organizer.
  • Select File > Add Active File to Set.
  • Drag files (DGN, DWG, raster, PDF, or i-models) from Windows Explorer into Print Organizer.
  • Drag models from the Models dialog into Print Organizer.
  • Drag Explorer links into Print Organizer.

Regardless of which method you use to add files to Print Organizer, the Create Print Definitions dialog opens to assist you in creating the print definitions. Print Organizer displays the files you added in the Input files list box, and allows you to add additional files, or remove files using the Add and Remove controls.

Create Print Definitions dialog

The Create Print Definitions dialog allows you to assign print definition property values to the files in the Input files list box via a print style or manually specified options. If you are creating fixed print definitions, both the Print style name and the Manually Specified Options controls are available for specifying print definition property values. If you are creating variable print definitions, only the Print style name control is available since Print Organizer requires a print style when creating variable print definitions.
