Break Element

Used to break an element.

You can access this tool from the following:

  • Ribbon: Drawing > Home > Modify
  • Toolbox: Modify

SettingDescription
Break by two points

Delete part of an element. The first data point defines the start point of the deletion and the second data point defines the direction and extent of the deletion.
  • A closed element is turned into an open element — an ellipse or circle becomes an arc; a shape becomes a line string; a closed B-spline curve becomes an open B-spline curve.
  • If an interior portion of an open element — line, line string, multi-line, curve, or arc — is partially deleted, the element is divided into two elements of the same type.

The key-ins TRIM BREAK BYTWOPOINTS RETAINGEOMETRY and TRIM BREAK BYTWOPOINTS RETAINPOINTS control how the curves are retained when you use the tool for deleting part of curves. The TRIM BREAK BYTWOPOINTS RETAINGEOMETRY key-in retains the curve geometry by adding node points, whereas the TRIM BREAK BYTWOPOINTS RETAINPOINTS key-in retains the node points by modifying the geometry. You need to run the required key-in before activating the Break Element tool. The two key-ins toggle each other; so when one is executed, other is deactivated and vice-versa. By default, TRIM BREAK BYTWOPOINTS RETAINGEOMETRY is active.

Note: To delete part of a multi-line, use the Multi-line Partial Delete tool . To make an opening in a multi-line without dividing the multi-line into two elements, use the Cut All Component Lines tool.
Break by point

Break the element at the defined point.
TRIM BREAK BYPOINT
Break by drag line

Break the element by creating a virtual line by entering two data points such that it intersects the element. AccuSnap is enabled when you select this setting.
TRIM BREAK BYDRAGLINE
Break by elements

Break the element by another intersecting element.
