What Is a Relational Database?

A relational database is an ordered collection of tables or files that represent objects, their properties, and relationships between the objects.

These terms are used throughout this guide:

  • A relational database contains a collection of tables.
  • Each table is composed of rows and columns.

Usually the tables in a database have a common column or field that relates one to the other. Hence the term relational database.
