Subdivision Mesh

Used to take an existing mesh element and create a new mesh that is smoother than the original. The tool applies a corner cutting process to the existing mesh. After selecting the mesh element, you can use <ctrl+data points> to select edges to remain sharp during the subdivision.

You can access this tool from the following:

  • Ribbon: Modeling > Mesh > Modify Meshes
  • Toolbox: Modify Meshes

SettingDescription
Output Type Sets the method used to create the subdivision mesh.
  • SubD Poly — Creates typical corner cutting results.
  • SubD Tess — Produces a smoother result that, if the subdivision is continued an infinite number of times, gives the closest approximation to the optimal result.
SubD Level Controls the number of times the mesh element facets are subdivided.
Keep Original If on, the original mesh element is retained in the model.
All Sharps If on, all sharp edges in the original mesh are retained, with only the faces subdivided into smaller facets.
