Paper and Layout Properties - Raster

The Main tab on the Print Styles dialog is used to specify paper and layout properties for raster print definitions.

The Main tab contains radio buttons, check boxes, and drop-down list boxes to define print definition properties. The first item in each list box is an empty list item. If a list box is set to the empty list item, it does not set the print definition property.

The check box has three states:

  • Checked indicates that you want the item set.
  • Unchecked indicates that you do not want the item set.
  • Shaded indicates that no setting is to be applied to the item.

Specifying Raster Paper Properties

Using the Paper controls on the Main tab, you can specify the paper size, orientation, and paper source of the printed output. You can also specify whether or not you want to use the full limits of the paper.

The Paper size control specifies the paper size (form) associated with the raster print. If a different paper size is selected and the Full sheet check box is set, the Size/Scale values are updated and the raster is fitted to the new paper size. The Full sheet control fits the raster image onto the paper limits of the selected paper size.

Use the Paper source control to specify a particular tray or paper type (Tray 1, Tray 2, Glossy Paper, Plain Paper). For example, you may have one tray that contains a fancy letterhead paper that only the first page in the set should print on, or you may have different color paper in different trays.

The Orientation control lets you specify whether or not the orientation is Landscape or Portrait.

Specifying Raster Layout Properties

The Layout controls on the Main tab let you specify the units, size/scale, rotation, origin, mirror, and whether or not you want to invert colors for binary raster files.

The Units control lets you specify the units in which the size/scale and origin values are displayed. Valid values are ft, in, m, dm, cm, and mm.

Using the Size/Scale control, you can specify an X size, Y size, scale, or whether or not you want to maximize the print.

The raster scale is a multiplier, showing the factor that the original pixels will be scaled up or down to meet the print size. For example, suppose you are printing to a 600 dpi printer or a 600 dpi PDF and you have a raster that is exactly 1100 x 850 pixels. If you maximize this raster to ANSI A (11 x 8.5), the raster scale will be 6. To produce the perfect image, you would need a raster that was 6600 x 5100 pixels. This would yield a raster scale of 1 - without any upscaling or downscaling.

The Rotation control lets you rotate the raster. Valid rotations for raster are 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees. The Origin control lets you specify an X origin and/or a Y origin for the print, or you can choose to center the print on the output media. The X origin and Y origin text fields are only visible when the Origin control is set to Specify.

The Mirror control lets you mirror the print about the X axis, Y axis, both axes, or to specify that the print not be mirrored (None).

The Invert colors (binary raster only) control lets you reverse the normal foreground / background rules for binary raster.
