Human vision uses the difference between the image seen by the left and right eyes to perceive distance. This effect can be duplicated by rendering two different images from slightly differing camera positions, and then superimposing the two images on one screen in different colors. When the composite image is viewed with 3D glasses, it appears to have depth.
