Edit a Strand Resource File

Element Symbology

Within the Strand Setup dialog box are the settings for the element symbology for Aerial, Underground, Buried, Riser, Duct and the 10 other user definable types.

Modify Strand Feature Symbology

  1. Select a Strand Lines criteria- Aerial, Underground, etc.
  2. Select the color, line weight and line style of the strand line.
  3. For each strand lines, select a text style, a weight and an offset to be assign to its distance annotation.
Note: The riser feature uses a cell associated to a PBA (Property Based Annotation) to display its height property. PBA’s are defined as a numeric value between brackets. Example: [1] will be built into the cell and when a cell with a PBA is placed, its PBA location will update with a chosen property from the database.

Other Text Symbology

Assign the text style to be used from the .DGNLIB and weight to the different features listed in the Element Symbology section.

Text Orientation

Text orientation, either parallel to the page or perpendicular to the Strand, is defined for the Residential, MDU, Commercial Counts, Pole #'s, and Addresses.

Flip Angle is the angle the text begins rotating in order for the text to be readable. The Flip Angle default setting is 110.00.

Project

The Project section sets the project scale when using cells, and sets the default cell library.

With the project scale set to 1.000, all cells are placed in the size in which they were originally created.

All cells should be created at active scale 1 with working units, Master Units equal ft and Sub-Units equal ft and the Resolution of 10 th per ft and 100 pos units per th. Metric units can also be used.

Addresses

The Addresses section sets whether addresses are used during the posting of Strand.

Clicking on the 'Addresses' button gives the user the option of choosing one of four options:
  • No Addresses = No addresses are being used.
  • Keyin Addresses = Addresses are being used and must be keyed in during placement.
  • Pick List Addresses = Choosing addresses from a pick list supplied by another source, such as a billing system.
  • Pick List Addresses with user Fields = Choosing Addresses from a pick list and having the option to add 'user field' information to individual addresses.

Click Yes or No for the use of leader lines and arrowheads.

If leader line is used, it extends from the Pole or Ped to the address number of the unit length entered.

The Length defines the trim distance from the Pole or Ped to the leader line being used and is scaled according to the project scale. For example, if the project scale is set to 1, keying in 45 results in a 45' trim distance. If the project scale is set to .5, keying in 45 results in a trim distance of 22.5'.

The Match counts option tells the program that the quantity of address text must match the Total Counts (residential, MDU, commercial). If it is set to Yes, the counts must be equal to the number of addresses displayed at a pole or ped location. A setting of No ignores the relation between the count and addresses. The default setting is No.

Add City, State, and Zip Code to the Strand Resource File

  1. From the Strand Setup dialog box, select either US Zip Codes or Postal Codes.
  2. The City/State/Zipcode Lists for Addresses dialog box opens.

  3. Enter a new City/State name and click Add.
  4. Select the City/State name from the list.
  5. Key in a Zip Code associated with the selected City/State and click Add. If there are more than one zip codes, enter them in the Zip Code field and click Add.
  6. Click Done once the City/State/Zip Code list has been completed.
Note: With City/State/Zip Code populated in the strand resource file, a drafter will be able to populate this information when placing an address in Comms using a pick list.

Distances

Set the unit mark, number of decimal places, and MDU delimiters for distances and apartments.

The choices include using foot marks ( ' ), meter marks (m) or no marks with the distance text.

In the # Dec Places field set the number of decimal places being used. The default is set to 0 (zero).

Apartment Delimiters

If using addresses with apartments, define the apartment separators. The purpose of this is to define the number of records for the database.

SINGLE APT designates an actual apartment number. For example, 111-A1 add a single record to the database with the apartment number field populated with A1.

GROUP APT is the apartment count delimiter. This is used for designating an apartment unit count. The separators can be: a slash ( / ), dash ( - ), etc. For example, 111/10 represents adding 10 records to the database. The apartment number field in the database is populated and incremented sequentially.

With Street Number or Without Street Number indicates whether the street number is or is not posted on the map, respectively.

Parallel

Setting Use Parallel to Yes or No will activate or deactivate the Place parallel functionality from the Strand Length command.

The Offset setting defines the offset to be used with the strand parallel placement function.

House Count Cells

Select the shape and color associated with each Residential Count, MDU, and Commercial Counts for the project.

Assign a PBA Count Cell

  1. Enter an offset distance to be used between the pole and the count.
  2. Click Select from the Strand Setup dialog box.
  3. The Select Cell dialog box opens.

  4. Select the appropriate cell and click OK.

If using custom housecounts, click on the 'Custom Counts' button. The following dialog will display:

A single alpha-numeric Code must be assigned to the custom housecount, and this code must be unique in the database.

Give the Custom Housecount a unique name, and select the cell to be displayed for that housecount. Click ‘Add’ to have this custom count added to the Strand resource file.

Note: A utility cell is not placed after placing a pole or pedestal if No Util Cell is selected instead of Use Cell.

Utility Cell

Utility Cells are on the cursor after a pole or ped is placed. Up to ten utility cells are available and must be named UTIL1, UTIL2, etc.

When the strand commands are run, a prompt for utility cells displays. Key in the number of the cell(s) required (i.e., 1,2,3, etc.) and the corresponding Utility cell is on the cursor for placement.

Poles/Peds

Add Poles/Peds to the selection list for use when posting strand.

Add Poles/Peds Cell

Select Add and choose the Pole or Ped cell from the selection list.

Delete a Pole/Ped Cell

Choose the Pole or Ped from the selection list and select DEL.

Street Levels

The Street Levels setting specifies the feature layer name used by the street name on the map. The street names identified on the map will later on be displayed in a drop down box when adding new addresses on the map.

Setup the Street Name Level

  1. From the Strand dialog box, click Street Levels.
  2. The Street Name Levels dialog box opens.

  3. Select levels and click Add to add the selected levels to the list.
  4. Select a level from the list and click Del to remove it from the list.
  5. Click Done when completed.
