Long Transaction Persistence with Expert Designer for Comms

The Expert Designer for Communications Workflow interface allows an organization to define work flows for specific job types within the organization and user privileges within each workflow for adherence to processes such as design approvals, cost estimates, as-built approvals, etc. By default, a linear workflow is delivered with Expert Designer for Comms but non linear work flows are also supported with this interface.

Project creation in Expert Designer for Comms

  1. Double click the Expert Designer for Comms shortcut on the desktop.
  2. In the Expert Designer for Comms interface, select My Work in the left of the dialog under Folder List. Right click in the center of the My Work dialog and choose: New.

  3. The New Work Request dialog appears. All that is needed in the New Work Request dialog to initiate a new session is a project name. Enter a project name and select OK.

  4. Once the project is created, select the new project, right click and navigate to Actions.

  5. Select Create Design to initiate the creation of a new DGN file from the Comms project seed as well as long transaction version for this project.
  6. Once the version and DGN file have been created, select the project and right click to launch Bentley Comms.

  • With the Create Design action, a version and DGN are created of the same name as the project. When Bentley Comms is launched, it is automatically launched into the new DGN and pessimistic version for this project.
  • Once in the new design session and project, the user only needs to choose the features to be extracted from the Interoperability dialog, extract the area where the work is to take place and lock the features for editing to begin working.
  • The Comms Design workflow in Expert Designer for Comms Bentley Comms delivers an “out of the box” design workflow which can be used or modified by an organization. Expert Designer for Comms creates the design session workspace, manages the different states of that workflow and handles the final post of a project to the “LIVE” or “as-built” database in a Comms project. Users are assigned different procedures and privileges within a workflow and email notifications can be sent upon state changes of a project in Expert Designer for Comms.
  • See the following chart for the actions and descriptions of each action delivered with Bentley Comms V8i Select Series 3.

Using the Expert Designer for Comms design workflow, users should not use the Merge to Parent option from inside of a Comms session to post changes to the “LIVE” database. Users should only post changes to the workspace when changes are made in a Comms session as the Expert Designer for Comms interface is built to handle the final post of a project in order to adhere to a workflow, audit that workflow and finally remove that version from the Oracle Comms user. If an organization requires modification to the delivered workflow, they should first contact a Bentley technical representative for assistance.
