Bentley Fiber

Splitters

Splitters setup defines the different fiber split and MUX devices that can used in the Bentley Comms fiber network data model.

Open the WDM Splitter Definitions Dialog Box

  1. From the Bentley Comms menu, select Fiber/Copper/ISP-Setup > OSP > Splitters.
  2. The WDM Splitters Definitions dialog opens.

Editing a Splitter or MUX Model

  1. In the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog, choose the model of splitter or MUX to be modified.
  2. Modify any attributes of the splitter or Mux.
  3. Select Update in the lower left corner of the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog to save changes in the spec file.

Creating a Splitter or MUX Model

  1. In the Database section of the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog, populate Model, Manufacturer, number of ports and Cost.
  2. Select Add in the lower left corner of the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog so that the new model appears in the Splitter list.
Note: The number of ports added to a splitter or MUX must include a common port. (Example: 9 ports added in the above screen capture for the DEMUX-01 device attributes allows for 8 output ports to 1 common port). A common port is created automatically when a Splitter is added.
  3. Once the device is added, select the new device from the Splitter List.
  4. In the Ports section of the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog, select the first port beneath the Common port and define a name for the port.
Note: Port names support 8 total characters (alphanumeric) and are user definable.
  5. Choose a wavelength to assign to the port, if applicable.

Note: Wavelengths used to populate the Wavelength property in the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog are defined in Fiber/Copper/ ISP-Setup > OSP > Wavelengths.
  6. Choose a fiber color to represent the fiber strand associated with the output port.
Note: Fiber colors are populated as the splitter or MUX device, when used in the fiber network, is represented in the color splice diagram reports in Comms along with wavelength and port name definitions.
  7. Populate a length for the fiber strand associated with the port being modified. (The Length property is defined as a unit. this means that if a user has a project defined as M/MM, a unit will equal 1 meter if added to the port as 1.00.)
  8. Populate a default loss value in db for the port being modified. Losses associated with ports on a Splitter device are calculated when the Bentley Comms Engineering Calculation tools are used.
  9. Select Save once the port has been modified and follow the same steps for the remaining ports on the device.
  10. Once all ports have been modified on the device and saved, select Update in the lower left corner of the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog to apply the new device definition.

Deleting a Splitter Model

  1. In the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog box, choose the device you wish to delete.
  2. Select Delete in the lower left corner of the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog box.
Note: Splitter devices already in use within the network cannot be deleted. In order to delete a Splitter device from the WDM Splitters Definitions dialog box, all of that particular type of Splitter must be replaced in the existing network before it can be removed.
